GAC Motor has taken a decisive step with the Trumpchi S9, unveiled at Auto Shanghai 2025. Measuring 5,060 mm long, 1,950 mm wide, and 1,760 mm tall, with a 2,930 mm wheelbase, it’s clearly positioned above the existing S7 in the Trumpchi family. The size alone signals intent: this is a full-size SUV with aspirations to take on luxury competition at home and abroad.

The styling reflects GAC’s “Hiding Sharpness in Moistness” design philosophy. The front is dominated by a closed fascia tied together by a full-width LED light bar. Strong shoulders, a high beltline, and options for two-tone paint push the S9 toward a premium look without going overboard.

Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Under the skin, the S9 is built around a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 118 kW (160 hp). It works in tandem with two electric motors—a 170 kW unit at the front and an 80 kW unit at the rear—for a combined output near 368 kW (around 500 hp).

A 44.5 kWh battery pack provides up to 252 km of electric range (CLTC), and with the engine factored in, the total driving range stretches to nearly 1,200 km. The dual-motor layout ensures all-wheel drive capability, allowing both efficiency and traction in varied conditions.

This is a powertrain clearly tuned for versatility: long-range family use, but with the immediacy of electric response when required.

Technology as a Selling Point

Where the Trumpchi S9 really sets itself apart is in its technology suite. The SUV integrates Huawei’s Qiankun ADS advanced driver-assist system, which fuses camera and LiDAR inputs for semi-autonomous functions. Highway lane centering, adaptive cruise, and automated parking are part of the package.

A roof-mounted LiDAR unit highlights its readiness for advanced navigation, while inside, Huawei’s Hongmeng smart cockpit forms the backbone of the infotainment system. The result is a vehicle that’s as much about digital architecture as mechanical engineering.

The S9’s interior has been designed with equal focus on luxury and practicality. Buyers can choose between five- and six-seat layouts. In six-seat form, the second row is fitted with captain’s chairs that recline and integrate their own climate and media controls.

Pre-orders in China began in late August 2025, with prices ranging from 259,900 to 289,900 yuan. Extended-range variants start from around 318,000 yuan (~$44,000). That makes it competitive when lined up against both domestic and international players in the premium SUV space.
