2026 Ford E-Tourneo Custom AWD

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Dual-motor electric AWD delivering up to 630 Nm from standstill.

  • Enhanced traction control with torque adjustments up to 50 times per second.

  • Standard vapour-injected heat pump for cold-weather efficiency.

Dual Motor All Wheel Drive Architecture

The 2026 Ford E-Tourneo Custom AWD expands Ford’s electric people-mover range with a new all-wheel drive configuration derived from the E-Transit Custom platform.

Previously offered with a high-power rear drive unit, the AWD version adds a second electric motor to the front axle.

Each drive unit can independently deliver the vehicle’s full power output, enabling flexible torque distribution. Combined, the system produces up to 630 Nm of torque from a standstill. That figure represents more than a 50 percent increase over the rear-wheel-drive variant.

The additional torque improves traction and enables trailer towing of up to 2,300 kg. Development testing was conducted in extreme winter environments including Finland, Sweden and the Italian Alps to validate the system under low-traction conditions.

Systems for Real-Time Torque Management and Stability

Advanced traction control and electronic stability systems are integrated with the dual-motor layout of the 2026 Ford E-Tourneo Custom AWD. The AWD control module adjusts torque between the front and rear axles and side-to-side as needed to perform up to 50 wheel slip assessments.

On uneven ice, wet tarmac or gravel tracks, this real-time modulation aims to preserve stability without sacrificing efficiency. At lower speeds, particularly during urban operation, the twin drive units can capture up to 50 percent more regenerative braking energy compared with the rear-drive model.

Driving range is a crucial component for both commercial and passenger applications, and the extra energy recovery directly contributes to it.

Efficiency in Cold Weather and Cabin Comfort

Every Ford E-Tourneo Custom AWD comes with a vapour-injected heat pump. In order to reduce battery consumption for cabin heating and maintain ideal battery temperatures, the patented system extracts ambient heat even at temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Engineers developed and tested the system in real-world temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius. The objective was to preserve usable range in cold climates.

Scheduled Pre-Conditioning allows owners to warm the cabin and defrost the windscreen while the vehicle remains plugged in. This also brings the battery to optimal operating temperature before departure, minimising energy draw once on the move.

For direct occupant comfort, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are offered. Rather than heating the entire cabin volume, targeted heating reduces energy demand while maintaining comfort during frequent stops.

Positioning in the Electric MPV Segment

Visually, the E-Tourneo Custom retains the upright proportions and expansive glazing expected of a modern multi-activity vehicle. The addition of AWD does not alter its silhouette, but it broadens its functional envelope.

Within Europe’s growing electric van and MPV market—where dual-motor configurations remain less common in people carriers [Inference]—the 2026 Ford E-Tourneo Custom AWD positions itself as a cold-climate capable alternative.

It combines increased torque, real-time electronic control and winter-optimised thermal management. The strategy is pragmatic. More traction. More usable energy. More flexibility.

For fleet operators and private buyers navigating snow, gravel or remote routes, the E-Tourneo Custom AWD offers a measured expansion of capability rather than a stylistic departure.
