Not the vehicle anyone expected from Fang Cheng Bao
Fang Cheng Bao built its reputation on rugged SUVs and boxy adventure vehicles. A low-slung sports car wasn't exactly the next chapter most people had in mind.
Yet that's exactly what appeared at the 2026 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, where the brand unveiled the Formula X alongside its new Formula S sedan family. While officially described as a production sports car concept, BYD claims the vehicle is already more than 80 percent representative of the final production version expected next year.
That alone makes it one of the more intriguing reveals from the show.
A design language built around stance
Much of the attention surrounding the Formula X comes from its proportions rather than any single styling feature.
The same philosophy applied to the Formula S lineup appears to carry over here. BYD repeatedly emphasizes a low-slung, wide-body stance, and the Formula X seems to push that idea further. The overall shape appears designed to sit close to the road, with visual emphasis placed on width and presence.
Although detailed dimensions have not been released, the sports car shares the brand's new "Life Metal Aesthetics" design language. According to Fang Cheng Bao, the theme combines the precision of engineered surfaces with influences drawn from the movement and posture of a cheetah. Some of those references may sound like marketing language, but the long, stretched profile and athletic proportions are easy to spot in the official material.
Positioned above the new Formula S family
The Formula X isn't being introduced as a standalone project.
Instead, it sits at the top of the newly created Formula product range, which now joins the existing Leopard and Titanium lineups. The Formula S sedan family will arrive first, offered in sedan, shooting brake, and larger sedan forms, while the Formula X is intended to serve as the halo model for the series.
In many ways, it appears to be the visual and performance flagship of the Formula lineup.
Performance details remain under wraps
For now, Fang Cheng Bao is keeping most of the technical specifications to itself.
Powertrain details, battery information, performance figures, and range estimates remain [Unverified]. The company has only stated that the Formula X represents the highest expression of the Formula series in terms of aesthetics, performance, and overall experience. Any assumptions beyond that would be [Speculation].
The lack of hard numbers leaves plenty of questions unanswered, but it also suggests the project is still moving toward its final production form.
A different side of BYD's expanding portfolio
The Formula X may ultimately prove significant not because of what has been revealed, but because of what it represents.
Over the past few years, Fang Cheng Bao has focused largely on off-roaders and lifestyle-oriented utility vehicles. The arrival of a dedicated sports car points toward a broader ambition, one that reaches beyond traditional SUV segments.
Whether the production version lives up to the promise remains to be seen. What is already clear is that Fang Cheng Bao wants the Formula X to become the centerpiece of its newest vehicle family, and perhaps the most attention-grabbing model the brand has produced so far.
