A fresh face in the crowded SUV segment

Dongfeng is aiming high with the 2026 Mage, a new upper-midsize SUV built for customers who expect efficiency, comfort, and a touch of performance in one package. Available in both turbocharged petrol and full-hybrid forms, the Mage is meant to serve as a showcase of the brand’s ability to deliver modern design with smart pricing.

On paper, it looks like a direct play against European and Asian SUVs in the same bracket. In practice, its mix of technology, roomy interior, and bold styling could make it a serious contender in markets where value matters just as much as image.

Design that leans sporty

At 4.65 meters long with a 2,775 mm wheelbase, the Mage has the proportions of a proper midsize SUV. What sets it apart is the way it wears its lines. A sloping fastback tailgate gives it a coupe-like stance, while the front is dominated by an inverted trapezoid grille and needle-thin headlights.

The sides are sculpted with overlapping surfaces and hidden door handles, a detail that adds a cleaner profile. Out back, LED lighting, a roof spoiler, and a pronounced lower diffuser push the sporty message further. It’s not subtle, but that’s exactly the point.

• The Mage ICE E2 uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 150 kW (204 hp) and 305 Nm of torque. It’s paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, complete with paddle shifters.
• The Mage HEV E3 combines the same turbo petrol with an electric motor, for 215 kW (292 hp) and 565 Nm of torque. This setup uses a four-speed automatic transmission.

Both versions ride on a suspension tuned for balance: McPherson struts up front, multilink at the rear. Ventilated front discs handle braking, and tire sizes are model-specific — 18-inch for the ICE, 19-inch for the hybrid.

Performance figures underline the differences: the ICE tops out at 190 km/h with 7.2 L/100 km combined fuel use, while the hybrid reaches 170 km/h but cuts consumption down to 5.7 L/100 km. Both carry a 51-liter tank, giving them solid range between fill-ups.

Driving character

Driving modes let owners tailor the feel. The ICE variant offers Eco and Comfort, while the hybrid adds a Sport setting to make use of its stronger output.

It’s not trying to be a track weapon, but the calibration of chassis and steering suggests Dongfeng wanted to give the Mage more than just commuter appeal.

Inside: comfort turned up a notch

Step inside and the emphasis shifts to space and finishes. Nappa leather seats, power adjustment for the driver, and heating come standard, while hybrid buyers also get power adjustment for the passenger seat.

Light floods the cabin through a 1.08 m² panoramic sunroof with a sliding sunshade. Digital displays dominate the dash: a 10.2-inch instrument panel and a 13.2-inch vertical central screen. Connectivity is covered with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Daily convenience wasn’t overlooked. A 50-watt wireless charging pad, front and rear USB-C ports, and dual-zone automatic climate control are all part of the package. Heated, power-folding mirrors automatically tuck in when the car is locked.

Dongfeng has been careful with its numbers. The Mage ICE E2 starts at €27,900, while the HEV E3 lists at €32,450. For the level of tech and comfort on offer, both figures are aggressive.
