2026 Denza B5

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • SUV hybrid with two motors, 425 kW and 760 Nm.

  • 100 kW DC fast charging and an electric range of 90 km.

  • Leopard version with adaptive suspension that is ready for off-road use.

A Self-Assured Upstart in the Luxury SUV Market

As it enters Australia's premium SUV market, the 2026 Denza B5 marks a new direction for BYD's luxury division.. It’s the brand’s first plug-in hybrid to officially land here, arriving with the right mix of numbers, practicality, and intent. For Denza, this isn’t just another import — it’s a statement of credibility.

From the first press photos, the proportions feel right. The stance is clean and assured, riding somewhere between executive and explorer. The design exudes confidence naturally; it has balanced overhangs, a strong beltline, and LED detailing that conveys accuracy without drawing attention to itself.

Underneath, the B5 runs on BYD’s DM-O (Dual Mode Offroad) platform — a hybrid setup designed to prioritize electric performance while retaining the durability expected from a proper four-wheel drive. It’s the sort of engineering focus that gives Denza a chance to compete directly with the likes of Volvo’s XC60 Recharge or Lexus RX500h, but with a little more depth in the drivetrain.

Performance Grounded in Versatility

At the heart of the B5 is a dual-motor plug-in hybrid system producing 425 kW and 760 Nm of torque. The numbers translate to effortless acceleration, whether in urban traffic or climbing into mountain passes. Power delivery is immediate and quiet, the kind of response you only get when electric torque leads the show.

The 31.8 kWh BYD Blade Battery — a structural pack renowned for safety and energy density — allows up to 90 km of pure-electric driving (WLTP) and supports 100 kW DC fast charging. It means most daily commutes can be done entirely on battery power, while longer drives are backed by the internal combustion unit that keeps range anxiety at bay.

For those who need more than asphalt manners, the B5 Leopard variant adds genuine trail capability. It introduces DiSus-P adaptive hydraulic suspension, front and rear differential locks, and a 3,000 kg towing capacity — credentials that turn the B5 from luxury crossover to light adventure companion.

Inside: Quiet Luxury Meets Function

The cabin feels distinctly premium, without drifting into excess. A 15.6-inch rotating central display dominates the dashboard, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The interface is simple, quick to respond, and designed around minimal distraction.

Materials are upscale — Nappa leather, soft-touch panels, and ambient lighting that feels warm rather than showy. The five-seat layout provides generous legroom, while 1,064 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats make it functional for long weekends or family runs.

Safety remains a Denza strong point. The B5 comes with 11 airbags, a 360-degree camera, and a full ADAS suite that includes adaptive cruise, blind spot detection, and lane assist. In practice, it’s as close as you can get to luxury autonomy in this segment without moving into the six-figure zone.
