2026 Daihatsu Rocky
By Lorenzo Bianchi October 9, 2025
First Daihatsu hybrid model introduced in Indonesia, launching in 2026.
Uses e-SMART HYBRID system where the engine generates electricity to drive the motor.
Powered by a 1.2-litre WA-VEX engine with compact FWD layout, built at the Shiga Plant in Japan.
Compact SUV, Now Electrified
The 2026 Daihatsu Rocky is the kind of car that tells you how the small SUV is maturing in Asia. It’s practical, affordable, and now — finally — electrified. Daihatsu’s announcement confirms that the Rocky Hybrid will reach Indonesian dealerships in 2026, marking the brand’s first hybrid introduction for the region
It’s a move that feels timed to perfection. Indonesia’s roads are already full of compact crossovers from Toyota, Suzuki, and Honda, but most are still conventional petrol models. Daihatsu, backed by Toyota’s hybrid expertise, has built something smaller and smarter — the e-SMART HYBRID system. Unlike the parallel setups in larger SUVs, this one works in series: the 1.2-litre petrol engine doesn’t directly power the wheels. Instead, it acts purely as a generator, producing electricity to drive a synchronous AC motor up front
It’s a neat piece of engineering, especially for a car this size — just under 4 meters long and 1.7 meters wide. You can imagine it weaving through Jakarta traffic or climbing narrow roads in Bandung without breaking a sweat.
Familiar Shape, New Energy
In photos, the Rocky hasn’t changed much from the standard model. It’s still got that upright, slightly squared-off profile — the kind of stance that makes it look tougher than it is. The proportions are tight, the wheel arches bold. It’s the kind of small SUV that feels comfortable in both dense city centres and rural towns.
There’s a certain honesty in the way Daihatsu designs its cars — function always before flair. Expect minor visual tweaks for the hybrid version, perhaps a distinct grille pattern or badging, but nothing exaggerated.
Inside, it should carry the same 5-seat layout, simple dashboard ergonomics, and generous storage that made the Rocky popular in Southeast Asia. Daihatsu’s formula has always been about everyday usability, and that seems unchanged here.
A Measured Step Toward Electrification
For Daihatsu, this isn’t about chasing Tesla or Hyundai’s EV crowd. The company knows its market. Indonesia’s infrastructure is still catching up, so a compact hybrid makes sense — something that saves fuel without asking drivers to search for chargers.
Production will take place at Daihatsu’s Shiga (Ryuo) Plant in Japan, with the cars exported to Indonesia fully built.
It’s a global effort packaged in a modest, approachable form — a hybrid for the many, not the few.
And that’s the point. The 2026 Daihatsu Rocky isn’t trying to be revolutionary. It’s trying to fit — into busy cities, into family budgets, into a country steadily moving toward cleaner transport.
