Most anniversary cars follow a familiar script. A few badges, a special paint colour, perhaps some commemorative trim, and that's about it.
The 2026 Citroen C3 Aircross Marine Nationale takes a more interesting approach.
Created to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the French Navy, the show car looks as though it has been designed with an actual mission in mind. It still starts life as a C3 Aircross, but almost every visible detail has been reworked to reflect the world of sailors, divers, and naval operations.
What's surprising is how naturally the theme fits the vehicle.
Built To Look Ready For Duty
The standard C3 Aircross already has a fairly upright and sturdy shape. Citroën's designers leaned into those qualities rather than trying to disguise them.
The front and rear bumpers have been completely redesigned, giving the SUV a more purposeful look. The lines are cleaner and more substantial, creating the impression that the vehicle was built to handle rough terrain and unpredictable conditions.
Then come the details.
The fog lights feature slatted covers inspired by the lamps once used by sailors to communicate in Morse code between ships. The tow hooks mimic traditional mooring cleats, while the roof rack has been developed specifically to carry diving equipment. Even the pattern used on the rack references naval rank insignia.
Nothing feels random. Every piece appears connected to the same story.
The oversized 275 mm tires wrapped around 17-inch wheels reinforce that impression. Whether the vehicle ever leaves the show floor or not, it certainly looks capable of heading somewhere remote.
Colours Inspired By The Ocean
The paint scheme plays a major role in the concept's identity.
A deep storm-blue body colour immediately evokes the sea, while contrasting grey finishes reference naval vessels and the changing colours of the coastline. Anniversary graphics are used sparingly, which helps the design avoid looking overly ceremonial.
One of the nicest touches is the tricolour roundel with an anchor placed on the rear pillar. It's subtle enough that you might miss it at first glance.
A Cabin Influenced By Life Underwater
Inside, Citroën moved beyond simple visual references.
The most unusual feature appears after sunset, when the cabin glows in deep red light inspired by submarine interiors. The effect is surprisingly atmospheric and gives the concept a very different character from a typical SUV.
Special fabrics have been selected to react to this lighting, while commemorative "400 years" graphics appear on the seats. A discreet blue-white-red trim strip runs across the dashboard, quietly reinforcing the connection to the French Navy.
More Than A Display Piece
Underneath the naval references remains the practical C3 Aircross platform.
Its spacious cabin, available seven-seat layout, and multi-energy powertrain options made it a natural choice for the project. Citroën wanted a vehicle that represented everyday usefulness as much as symbolism.
That's probably why the concept works.
Rather than feeling like a themed exercise created for an anniversary event, the C3 Aircross Marine Nationale comes across as something designed by people who genuinely wanted to reflect the values of the organisation it celebrates. The result is unusual, highly detailed, and considerably more memorable than most commemorative show cars.
