By Lorenzo Bianchi April 11, 2026
Celebrates 50 years of Citroën’s first limited edition model.
Original featured orange and white two-tone design with striped roof.
Based on 2CV 4 with 435 cc engine and lightweight simplicity.
A simple design that stood out instantly
The 2026 Citroen 2 CV Spot 50th Anniversary isn’t about a new model. It’s about revisiting one that already made its point decades ago.
Back in 1976, the 2 CV Spot arrived with a look that didn’t really follow the usual Citroën formula. Bright Orange Ténéré paired with Blanc Meije. White wings, orange body, and a striped soft roof that looked more like a beach chair than a car accessory.
It worked. Not because it was subtle, but because everything matched. The colours, the materials, even the door panels followed the same theme.
That consistency is what stands out now, looking back at it 50 years later.
Proportions stayed humble, intentionally so
The 2CV itself was never about presence.
Tall, narrow, softly shaped. It sat lightly on its wheels, with a stance that prioritised comfort and simplicity over anything aggressive. The Spot edition didn’t change that.
What it did instead was shift how the car was perceived. The two-tone treatment and graphic elements made the small body feel more expressive, even playful. [Inference]
Underneath, it remained based on the 2CV 4, with its compact dimensions and lightweight construction defining how it moved and how it was used day to day.
Interior matched the exterior idea
Inside, the theme carried through without interruption.
The upholstery used a Venetian Orange jersey fabric, paired with separate front seats and simple door panels that echoed the same colour split seen outside. Even the striped roof had its counterpart inside, reinforcing the same visual identity.
The steering wheel, a Quillery design, remained unchanged in function but sat within a cabin that felt more coordinated than most cars of its time.
It wasn’t about adding luxury. It was about making everything feel connected.
Mechanical setup stayed deliberately basic
Technically, the Spot didn’t push boundaries.
It used the 435 cc engine from the 2CV 4, offering modest performance but enough to exceed 100 km/h. Fuel consumption was low, around 5.4 litres per 100 km, which suited its role as an everyday car.
There were no major upgrades or performance tweaks tied to the special edition. The focus stayed on accessibility and usability rather than mechanical change.
That simplicity is part of why the car has lasted in memory.
Practicality was always the point
The 2CV platform was built around ease of use, and the Spot didn’t move away from that.
Lightweight construction, simple mechanicals, and a focus on everyday driving made it practical in a way that still feels relevant. It wasn’t designed to impress on paper. It was designed to work.
Even the limited run didn’t change that. Around 1,800 units were produced, and they sold out within days of launch.
A turning point for Citroen
The 2026 Citroen 2 CV Spot 50th Anniversary highlights something broader than just a single car.
The original Spot was Citroën’s first limited edition model. A relatively simple idea, but one that changed how the brand approached design and customer engagement going forward.
Fifty years on, it still holds that place. Not as a technical milestone, but as a cultural one. A small car that managed to shift perception, just by being a bit different.
