2026 Changan Auto UNI-S

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • All 2026 Changan UNI-S models use a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 138 kW and 300 Nm.

  • Three grades are available: CS, CL and CE, each adding more technology, safety and convenience features.

  • Pricing starts at R389,900, with the flagship CE priced at R469,900.

A New Challenger Enters the Mid Size SUV Market

The 2026 Changan UNI-S has officially launched in South Africa, giving buyers three distinct versions to choose from. The lineup consists of CS, CL and CE grades, each built on the same foundation but aimed at different budgets and expectations.

All models share the same overall dimensions, measuring 4.5 metres in length and offering 475 litres of luggage space. From the outside, the UNI-S carries a modern SUV profile with LED lighting and alloy wheels fitted across the range. The entry-level CS rides on 18-inch wheels, while the range-topping CE gains larger 19-inch alloys that give it a slightly more assertive stance.

Turbo Power Across the Entire Range

Unlike some rivals that reserve stronger engines for higher trims, Changan has chosen to fit every UNI-S with the same turbocharged powertrain.

Under the bonnet sits the company's Blue Whale 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 138 kW and 300 Nm of torque. Power is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while a multi-link rear suspension setup is fitted to support ride comfort and handling.

Those figures place the UNI-S among the more powerful offerings in its segment on paper, particularly considering that the engine specification remains unchanged across the lineup.

Digital Cabin Sets the Tone

Inside, the UNI-S focuses heavily on technology. Even the CS grade receives a 12.8-inch infotainment display paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, supported by Changan's AI Elf voice assistant system.

Ventilated front seats, automatic climate control and rear air vents are also standard equipment. The cabin appears designed around everyday usability rather than dramatic styling, with a clear emphasis on keeping drivers connected and comfortable.

Moving up to the CL introduces microfibre leather upholstery, electric driver seat adjustment and a broader range of convenience features including rain-sensing wipers and heated folding mirrors.

Safety Technology Expands With Each Grade

One of the more interesting aspects of the UNI-S range is how its safety technology evolves through the lineup.

The CL adds features such as Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Keeping Assist. These systems bring the UNI-S closer to competitors that have increasingly adopted advanced driver assistance technology.

At the top of the range, the CE adds Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Collision Warning. Automatic parking assist, an electric tailgate, panoramic sunroof and an upgraded eight-speaker audio system further distinguish the flagship model.

Pricing and Market Position

South African pricing starts at R389,900 for the UNI-S CS, rising to R429,900 for the CL and R469,900 for the CE. Every model is backed by a five-year/150,000 km warranty, a five-year/90,000 km service plan and roadside assistance coverage.

With strong standard performance figures, a lengthy equipment list and a clear three-grade structure, the UNI-S enters one of the market's busiest SUV categories with a strong focus on value and technology.
