2026 BYD Racco

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • BYD Racco (Sea Otter) debuts as a Japan-focused K-EV at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show.

  • Equipped with a 20 kWh blade battery, delivering up to 180 km WLTC range.

  • For practicality, it has a long wheelbase, sliding rear doors, and compact, boxy dimensions.

A Minor Electric Advancement for BYD in Japan

At the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, BYD rolled out something small, clever, and very Japanese — the 2026 BYD Racco. Known internally as the K-EV BYD Racco (Sea Otter), this compact electric car marks the brand’s first K-car designed specifically for Japan’s tight streets and precise tastes.

The reveal wasn’t just about a new model. It was part of BYD’s broader “ONE BYD” presentation — an effort to show the company’s full reach, from passenger EVs to commercial transport. The automaker even split its display into two pavilions: one for everyday electric cars like the Racco, and another for buses and trucks, underlining its ambition to cover every corner of Japan’s electric mobility scene.

Designed for Tight Streets and Big Crowds

The Racco doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not. It’s a small, upright city car, the kind you see darting between convenience stores and commuter stations. The front end is clean and friendly — a closed grille, narrow rectangular headlights, and smooth surfacing replace any aggressive lines. It’s quietly charming, in that uniquely Japanese way.

Short overhangs and a long wheelbase make it look balanced and a bit cheeky, while the floating roof and sliding rear doors give it practical, almost retro appeal. Even small touches, like the matte finish on the hood, are there for function — reducing glare under harsh sunlight.

It’s a design that feels intentional, made for compact living and easy movement in crowded cities rather than posing for driveway photos.

Inside the Tiny Cabin

The interior is minimalist but warm. There’s a three-spoke steering wheel with heating, a simple digital display, and a floating center screen that mirrors BYD’s larger models. The front seats are joined in a single bench-style design — an old-school touch that makes the space feel open.

Everything inside seems aimed at calm utility rather than luxury. Materials are practical, the layout uncluttered. It’s easy to imagine it being a quiet, relaxed space on a rainy Tokyo morning commute.

Small Battery, Smart Purpose

Powering the Racco is BYD’s signature 20 kWh blade battery, good for around 180 km of WLTC range. It’s not trying to go far; it’s trying to go often — ideal for daily city driving and short trips. The compact size and light weight make it efficient, and with Japan’s dense charging network, range anxiety won’t be much of a concern.

BYD seems to have tailored the Racco for those who value compact practicality over numbers — a lightweight electric companion, not a statement piece.

The Expanding Japanese Presence of BYD

With models like the Dolphin and Seal, BYD has established a recognizable presence and 66 retail locations since entering the Japanese market in 2022. The addition of the Racco and Hiace 06 DM-i hybrid extends that reach further.

For BYD, the Racco isn’t just another car — it’s a symbol of how far the brand has localized. A small, quiet electric car that fits neatly into Japan’s urban rhythm, and perhaps, its heart.
