BYD Australia has confirmed the M9 for local showrooms, marking the brand's first move into the premium people-mover segment. Announced August 26, the M9 arrives during the final quarter of 2026 and will be sold exclusively with BYD's latest Dual Mode DM-i 5.0 Super Hybrid powertrain — no fully electric version is planned for this model, at least initially.

Exterior design observations

BYD describes the M9's exterior as drawing from a traditional Chinese garden, built around strong horizontal and vertical lines rather than sweeping curves. Press photos show a wide chrome-trimmed grille section up front, slim LED headlights and a full-width LED light bar across the tailgate, with the brand describing the front-end treatment as dragon-inspired. The overall silhouette is elongated and low for a people mover, which BYD frames as elegant rather than boxy — a fair read based on the images provided.

Vehicle proportions and stance

The M9 measures 5,145mm long, 1,970mm wide and 1,805mm high, riding on a 3,045mm wheelbase — sizeable numbers that put it toward the larger end of the people-mover class. BYD says this delivers generous accommodation across all three rows.

Interior space and technology

Interior photos show a two-tone cabin finished in cream and tan leather with wood-effect trim panels and a floating centre touchscreen ahead of the driver. BYD confirms Premium variants get heated and ventilated front seats, while second-row captain's chairs add heating, ventilation and what the brand calls a near zero-gravity seating position.

Powertrain or performance details

The DM-i 5.0 system pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. The M9 Premium uses a 36.60kWh BYD Blade Battery for up to 145km of EV-only range and up to 850km of combined range on the WLTP cycle; the Dynamic variant gets a smaller 20.39kWh Blade Battery. Both grades support AC and DC charging along with Vehicle-to-Load functionality, letting the M9 power external equipment from its battery. Both the Premium and the upcoming Dynamic variant are front-wheel drive only.

Practical usability features

Luggage space is rated at 470 litres with all seats in place, and the M9 can tow up to 1,500kg braked. Safety equipment includes up to nine airbags, a 360-degree camera system, five millimetre-wave radars and eight ultrasonic sensors backing a broad driver-assistance suite. BYD says 73 per cent of the vehicle's structure uses high-strength steel for crash performance.

Market positioning

BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins positioned the M9 as suited to both families and fleets chasing lower running costs, pointing to its EV-only commuting range and long-distance touring capability.
