Familiar Shape, New Power
Look at it from a distance and the e-Transporter doesn’t scream change. It’s the same clean-lined boxy profile buyers expect from VW’s best-selling van. Yet under that conservative skin lies a full electric setup. Built alongside the Ford Transit Custom in Turkey, the van keeps its Transporter identity while embracing the quiet, battery-powered shift Volkswagen is rolling out across its commercial lineup.
The face is simple, almost cautious—flat panels, upright stance, nothing to scare off the loyal diesel crowd. And that’s the point. This isn’t a flashy EV designed for headlines. It’s a working van that just happens to run on electrons.
Power and Range Options
Volkswagen offers two flavors: a 136 hp version and a stronger 218 hp variant, both using the same 64 kWh battery. Official range lands around 192 miles WLTP, a figure that should cover most urban and regional routes without breaking a sweat.
There was talk of a 286 hp model during development, but the production focus is squarely on the two confirmed outputs. It makes sense—buyers want dependability, not excess. Charging speeds haven’t been shouted about, but the battery size suggests fast-charging capability in line with current mid-market EV vans.
Load Space and Payload
Specs matter here, and Volkswagen doesn’t disappoint. The e-Transporter offers roughly 5.8 m³ of cargo volume and carries just over 1,009 kg of payload. Load length comes in at about 2,602 mm, width at 1,777 mm, and height at 1,433 mm—numbers that match what van operators are used to.
In practice, it’ll swallow the usual cargo—pallets, tools, supplies—and get on with the job. Tow ratings haven’t been fully publicized, which leaves a small gap in the spec sheet, but for most buyers the payload and volume will be the deciding factors.
Inside the Cabin
Step inside and you realize VW hasn’t skimped on driver comfort. Standard kit includes a heat pump, single-zone climate control, heated seats, and all-season tires. Move up to the Commerce Pro trim and you add touches like a heated steering wheel and LED rear signature lighting.
It’s still a van cabin—hard plastics where needed, sensible storage everywhere—but it’s clearly tuned for long days behind the wheel. And crucially, Volkswagen backs it with five years of warranty and service coverage, a safety net that matters when fleets are taking their first step into EVs.
Pricing in the UK starts from £41,965 excluding VAT, which puts it right in the ballpark with early electric rivals. Deliveries begin March 2025, and VW is keen to move this into fleet contracts quickly.
Against the Ford E-Transit Custom, its closest relation, the e-Transporter trades on badge loyalty and VW’s aftersales promise. Against Stellantis group offerings—the Peugeot e-Expert, Vauxhall Vivaro Electric—it positions itself slightly higher on price but steadier in perceived brand value.
