A Celebration of Dakar Dominance
Few names in off-road racing carry as much weight as the LandCruiser. For more than a decade, Toyota Auto Body has campaigned the SUV in the Dakar Rally, bringing home class wins year after year. To mark the team’s twelfth consecutive victory, Toyota has put together something special: the LandCruiser Rally Raid Edition.
It isn’t a new generation or a dramatic re-engineering, but a purposeful evolution of the GR Sport trim, fine-tuned for the kind of punishment that Dakar dishes out. Built in strictly limited numbers, it’s as much a celebration of Toyota’s motorsport legacy as it is a genuine off-road tool.
Built for the Rough Stuff
The changes are visible before you even climb aboard. The Rally Raid sits on 18-inch Enkei PDT1 alloys wrapped in Toyo Open Country all-terrain tyres. Red brake calipers peek out from behind the wheels, while chunky tow hooks and mud flaps underline the functional upgrades. A set of “TLC” graphics (for Team LandCruiser) marks the link to Dakar success.
Toyota has also gone further than cosmetic tweaks. The cab mounts have been reinforced to better isolate vibrations on rough surfaces, while suspension revisions sharpen the LandCruiser’s already capable off-road manners. Underbody protection and other durability tweaks are in place too, though Toyota hasn’t overstated the details — a rare case of substance taking priority over marketing gloss.
Inside the Rally Raid
Step inside and the tone changes from rugged to refined. Special leather and ultra-suede seats bring both support and a hint of luxury, while a Rally Raid Edition plaque on the center console makes sure nobody mistakes this for a standard GR Sport. Beyond that, the interior remains familiar LandCruiser territory: practical, comfortable, and designed to withstand years of use without drama.
The overall effect is understated but effective — Toyota hasn’t tried to reinvent the cabin, only elevate it where it matters.
Diesel Power, Proven Drivetrain
Under the hood, nothing radical has changed. The Rally Raid Edition carries the same 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel as the GR Sport. Output holds steady at 304 hp (227 kW) and 700 Nm of torque. Power is delivered through a 10-speed automatic and a full-time four-wheel drive system with electronic locking differentials at both axles.
On paper, that may not sound like a leap forward, but the reality is that Toyota has stuck with a setup that has proven itself time and again — in Dakar, no less. The performance focus here isn’t straight-line speed; it’s durability and the ability to get through just about anything.
Exclusivity is the other part of the Rally Raid story. Toyota is only building 12 examples, all destined for Japan. To broaden the reach slightly, it’s also offering 12 conversion kits that allow current LandCruiser 300 GR Sport diesel owners to upgrade their vehicles to Rally Raid spec.
Pricing reflects the rarity: ¥9,380,800 for the full Rally Raid Edition, or ¥1,511,400 for the conversion kit. Applications opened in mid-September and run through late September, with deliveries scheduled from December. Buyers are selected through a lottery system, underscoring the collectability of this edition.
