That car featured a frameless door design, a rear-engine layout and limited production — only 2,517 units of the MBX were built.

With the 2025 Skoda 1000 MBX Coupe Concept, Škoda revisits this legacy. According to the designers, the goal was to retain the original model’s “active lifestyle” ethos rather than make a pure sports car. Exterior designer Antti Mikael Savio described it as “sportier overall, yet still has a friendly look.”

Design Language and Architecture

The body roughly follows a coupe form yet incorporates modern architecture — a flat-floor electric platform that allows for a wide, comfortable front bench seat and cinema-style individual rear seats. According to design lead David Stingl, the rear seats can fold up to maximise cargo volume — a nod to practical usability.

The exterior displays several subtle references to the 1960s original: raised headlamps above the bonnet, a bold crease along the flanks, and a distinctive C-pillar treatment. Interestingly, the concept dispenses with a conventional rear window, replacing it with a camera view — offering extra cargo space behind the rear compartment.

The term “Modern Solid” used by Škoda describes the visual approach: strong, confident forms, functional surfaces, and minimal ornamentation. Savio noted that he studied brutalist architecture in developing the look.

Interior Innovation

Inside the concept, the 2+2 layout emerges with a flat-floor electric architecture enabling the front seat to merge into a wide bench, while the rear seats operate in tip-up cinema-style. When the rear seats are folded, the luggage space expands significantly — large enough to accommodate a bicycle or camping gear.

The cockpit is defined by an oval dashboard module enclosed in glass — an echo of the original’s instrument panel layout. Rather than a central console, the concept emphasises minimalism, clean graphics, ambient lighting and chrome replacements — all aligned with the Modern Solid philosophy.
