2025 Rivian R1S Borealis

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Borealis Purple debuts as a premium $3,000 color option for the R1S.

  • Offered on Tri and Quad variants, paired strikingly with bronze wheels.

  • Rivian adds a limited-time Lease Bonus across select 2026 R1S and R1T models.

A New Finish for the 2025 R1S

Rivian has rolled out a new color for its R1S and R1T range, and it arrives with more presence than expected. Named Borealis Purple, the paint takes inspiration from the shifting tones of the Northern Lights. On the R1S, the finish settles into the bodywork with a moody depth that seems made for the SUV’s tall shoulders and clean surfacing. Early images show the shade leaning toward a darker, metallic violet, shifting subtly under controlled lighting. Those familiar with Rivian’s more expressive palette options will recognize the brand’s comfort with adventurous color, though this one carries a distinctly more dramatic character.

Based on those same images, the R1S benefits slightly more from the treatment than the R1T. The SUV’s enclosed volume provides a continuous canvas for the richer tones, whereas the pickup’s break between cab and bed interrupts the effect — not negatively, just with a different impact.

Performance Notes and Variant Availability

Borealis Purple is available only on Tri and Quad variants of both the R1S and R1T at launch. Rivian has not confirmed whether the finish will extend to Dual Standard or Dual Large Pack models. Any broader rollout will likely depend on demand, though no official guidance has been given yet.

As with other non-standard Rivian finishes, the color carries a $3,000 premium, pricing it alongside shades such as Red Canyon and Rivian Blue. The positioning keeps Borealis aligned with the brand’s tradition of treating color as a distinct personalization tier.

Features and Visual Details

Pairing plays a significant role in the effect of Borealis Purple. Rivian’s optional 20- and 22-inch burnished bronze wheels introduce a warm contrast that deepens the paint’s cooler undertones. In imagery, the combination amplifies the SUV’s stance, especially when matched with the bright blue brake calipers that have become a recognizable detail on higher-spec Rivian builds.

kome-text

The color itself isn’t loud, but it’s far from subtle. It brings a premium, bespoke energy to a vehicle already known for its clean proportions and upright posture. For buyers looking for individuality without drifting into novelty, Borealis lands comfortably in that space.

Market Positioning and Lease Incentives

Rivian’s timing is not limited to color alone. Select 2026 R1S and R1T models now qualify for a $5,000 Lease Bonus when delivered by December 31, including Tri, Dual Standard, and Dual Large Pack variants with the Performance Upgrade. Quantities remain limited, and Rivian notes the offer is available only while inventory lasts.

Even with the bonus, leasing remains a premium proposition. Rivian’s own example places the R1T Dual Standard at an effective $948 per month, while the R1S Dual Standard comes in slightly lower at an effective $798, both before destination fees and taxes.
