A Frontier Recast for the Rapids
At this year’s SEMA Show, Nissan unveiled the 2025 Frontier Rapid Runner Concept, a reimagined version of its popular midsize pickup created for a very specific kind of enthusiast — those who chase rivers rather than roads. The truck builds on the proven Frontier PRO-4X platform but transforms it into a specialized white-water adventure vehicle designed to support kayaking expeditions in remote terrain
Developed by POWERNATION TV, the Rapid Runner serves as an evolution of the “Project Trailgater,” which Nissan showcased in 2023. That earlier build was made for tailgating and outdoor recreation; this one is about endurance and exploration.
Design: Purpose with Personality
Visually, the Rapid Runner carries the stance and seriousness of a purpose-built support rig. Its track width has been widened thanks to suspension and axle components from the Nissan TITAN, giving it both stability and a commanding footprint. The truck rides on prototype NISMO 17-inch ASCEND wheels wrapped in 37-inch Yokohama GEOLANDAR X-MT tires, giving it the kind of presence usually reserved for off-road rally machines.
The front and rear bumpers have been redesigned for protection and clearance, while widened fender flares ensure the massive tires fit neatly under the bodywork. The most distinctive visual cues, however, are the custom tubular doors — open-air panels that make the cab feel part of the landscape, a fitting detail for a vehicle intended to spend time near water.
On the roof and in the bed, NISMO rack systems provide space for multiple kayaks and gear. Each element is functional, down to the tie-down points and strap positions, and the configuration feels more expedition-ready than ornamental
Adventure-Driven Engineering
While the Rapid Runner’s engine remains standard [Unverified], its underpinnings have been engineered for serious off-road work. The widened stance and enhanced suspension geometry make it better suited for rocky descents and riverbank approaches — where balance and articulation matter more than speed.
For its intended audience, the real appeal lies in the details. There’s paddle and wetsuit storage, a rack-mounted portable shower, and roof-mounted solar panels to recharge small electronics. The interior features Covercraft waterproof seat covers and lined flooring, practical touches for soaking-wet occupants and muddy boots. It’s an example of a concept that isn’t about horsepower — it’s about thoughtfulness.
Even the power infrastructure, with solar and compressor integration, feels grounded in genuine field use rather than SEMA theatrics.

The Rapid Runner stands out not because it reinvents the Frontier but because it reimagines what a midsize truck can support. Its design focuses less on brute off-road competition and more on enabling outdoor pursuits that require self-sufficiency — a space few manufacturers explore seriously.
