2025 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible Super Special

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • One-off JCW Convertible built at MINI Plant Oxford.

  • Custom two-tone exterior with diagonal split design.

  • Interior features over 50 bespoke, hand-finished elements.

A one-off design that leans into contrast

The 2025 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible Super Special doesn’t follow a typical product brief. It’s a one-off, built around a specific owner’s vision, and it shows in the details.

The exterior is where that comes through most clearly. Finished in a mix of midnight black and a custom-tinted metallic green, the two-tone treatment isn’t split in the usual way. Instead, the colours invert from left to right, creating a diagonal division across the body.

It’s not subtle. The paintwork itself is hand-sprayed and clear-coated, which adds another layer to how the surfaces catch light. Even stationary, the car reads differently depending on the angle.

The soft top carries a tonal Union Jack pattern, which feels expected on a MINI, but it’s handled in a way that doesn’t dominate the rest of the design.

Familiar proportions, but visually reworked

Underneath, this is still a JCW Convertible. The proportions haven’t changed.

Short overhangs, upright stance, compact footprint. All familiar. What’s different is how the colour treatment reshapes the perception of those proportions.

The diagonal split pulls the eye across the car rather than along it. It makes the body look longer from some angles, more compact from others. Not something that shows up in a spec sheet, but noticeable in photos. [Inference]

Interior built around a single theme

Inside, the custom work goes further than expected.

The green theme carries across more than 50 individual elements, from stitching and trim accents to smaller details like speaker surrounds and badging. It doesn’t feel like a surface-level change. Everything has been considered, even the parts that aren’t immediately visible.

There’s a bespoke “MINI.01” identification system integrated throughout the cabin, along with personalised labels and details tied to the owner’s preferences. The Harman Kardon audio system gets its own visual treatment as well, with metallic green accents around the speakers.

Every component has been prototyped and installed by hand at Plant Oxford, which explains the level of consistency across the interior.

Performance stays true to JCW roots

Mechanically, there’s no indication of changes to the standard John Cooper Works setup. That likely means the same turbocharged petrol engine and front-wheel-drive layout carry over. [Unverified]

In this case, performance isn’t the focus. The project is more about exploring how far factory-led customization can go without stepping outside the production environment.

Usability remains unchanged beneath the surface

Because the underlying car hasn’t been altered structurally, usability stays intact.

It’s still a fully road-legal convertible, with the same everyday functionality expected from a JCW model. Roof operation, seating layout, and general practicality remain unchanged.

What’s different is the sense of ownership. This isn’t just a spec combination. It’s a one-off execution of a personal brief, built directly into the car rather than added later.

A showcase of what MINI can do in-house

The 2025 MINI John Cooper Works Convertible Super Special isn’t intended as a production model.

It’s more of a demonstration. MINI’s design and production teams using a single project to explore how flexible the factory process can be. The result is less about volume and more about possibility.

For the brand, it points toward a future where customization goes beyond options lists and into something closer to individual builds.
