2025 Kia Carnival South African Version

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Offered locally in EX eight-seater and SXL seven-seater trims, both powered by the 2.2 CRDi turbo-diesel with 148 kW and 440 Nm.

  • SXL trim brings premium touches including digital instruments, Bose audio, head-up display, and heated/ventilated seats.

  • Standard across both: five-year unlimited-km warranty and six-year maintenance plan.

Styling Tweaks with SUV Influence

The Carnival has always leaned toward an SUV-like stance, and the 2025 update pushes that further. The bonnet is more sculpted, the wheel arches a little bolder, and the LED lighting signature more defined. Both trims wear a reworked front fascia and new alloy wheel designs — 18-inch for the EX and 19-inch for the SXL.

It’s still unmistakably an MPV, but these changes give it more visual presence, particularly in the SXL trim with its gloss-black accents and larger wheels.

Diesel Power Across the Range

Kia has kept things simple under the bonnet. Every South African-spec Carnival gets the familiar 2.2-litre CRDi turbo-diesel, producing 148 kW and 440 Nm. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic sending power to the front wheels.

It’s a strong, flexible unit that suits the Carnival’s role as a long-distance people-mover. Kia claims an average consumption of 6.7 L/100 km, which is competitive for a vehicle of this size and weight.

Cabin Space and Layouts

The EX trim uses an eight-seat layout, while the SXL is a seven-seater with more generous individual seats in the second row. In both cases, the cabin is light and airy, with wide-opening doors for easier entry and exit.

Standard kit includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, and a reversing camera. There are USB charging points in all rows — a practical detail for families on the move.

SXL Turns Up the Luxury

The SXL grade elevates the Carnival’s interior and tech offering. The analogue dials give way to a full digital instrument cluster. Audio comes via a Bose premium sound system. The driver gets a head-up display, while the front seats gain heating and ventilation.

There’s also a powered tailgate and powered sliding side doors, along with upgraded interior lighting. Advanced driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, round out the package.

Safety and Support

Seven airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, hill-start assist, and ISOFIX child-seat anchors for both second- and third-row seats are standard. Kia’s warranty runs for five years with unlimited mileage, and the maintenance plan covers six years or 90 000 km.

It’s a comprehensive aftersales package that will appeal to buyers looking for predictable running costs.

Positioned for South African Families

In South Africa’s relatively small MPV market, the Carnival stands out for its balance of space, spec, and warranty coverage. The EX model is aimed at larger families who want maximum seating and value. The SXL targets those willing to trade one seat for more luxury and tech.

Its pricing — R1 049 995 for the EX and R1 299 995 for the SXL — puts it in the same conversation as well-specced SUVs, making it a viable alternative for buyers who need more usable space without moving into commercial-style people-carriers.
