2025 Ital Design EVX Concept
By Lorenzo Bianchi September 11, 2025
Platform versatility: EVX adapts Volkswagen’s MEB+ platform into a compact coupé format.
Design research: Developed as a proportion study with preliminary engineering feasibility.
Digital-first reveal: Presented in holographic 3D at IAA Summit to highlight Italdesign’s modeling expertise.
A Study in Proportions
The Italdesign EVX Concept isn’t a teaser for a production car. It’s a design exercise, commissioned by Volkswagen Platform Business, to show how far the MEB+ electric platform can be stretched. Italdesign’s brief was simple: take the architecture underpinning much of Volkswagen Group’s EV portfolio and explore new proportions in the form of a compact 2+2 coupé.
At 4.23 meters long, 1.82 meters wide, 1.49 meters high, and with a 2.6-meter wheelbase, the EVX slots into the same footprint as an urban commuter car, but wears bodywork with a more sporting stance. The point was not just aesthetics—it was to prove feasibility. Italdesign’s team ran a preliminary engineering study to ensure the layout made sense if a manufacturer wanted to take it further.
A Different Take on MEB+
Volkswagen’s MEB platform is already a workhorse. It underpins everything from the ID.3 hatch to the ID. Buzz van. The EVX demonstrates that its MEB+ update can accommodate body types not typically associated with the architecture. By configuring it as a coupé, Italdesign underlines just how scalable the platform is—not just across brands within the Group, but potentially for outside OEM clients as well.
This dual focus is part of Italdesign’s DNA. As a studio embedded in the Volkswagen Group but still outward-facing, it often functions as both an internal think-tank and a consultant to other automakers.
A Hologram Instead of a Prototype
When Italdesign showed the EVX at the IAA Summit in Munich, it wasn’t a physical car on a turntable. Instead, visitors saw a holographic projection. That decision wasn’t about saving costs so much as emphasizing process. Italdesign wanted to highlight its 3D digital design workflows, and holography gave attendees a chance to walk around the car virtually, judging proportions and surfacing in real time.
