A Concept with Unusual Priorities

The 2025 IED Project Damocles arrived as part of IED Torino’s annual thesis showcase, developed in collaboration with Dallara. Among six very different visions for the future of sports cars, Damocles is immediately recognizable for its unconventional seating: two seats arranged in tandem, one directly behind the other.

In the press shots, the alignment is striking. The driver and passenger sit along the car’s central axis, like a fighter jet cockpit. It’s an architectural choice meant to improve balance and aerodynamics, and it gives the car a sharp, narrow profile that feels distinct among concept sports cars.


Engine Placement and Driving Dynamics

At the core sits a four-cylinder in-line engine, mounted transversely just behind the passenger. The choice isn’t headline-grabbing in terms of displacement or horsepower, but that’s not the point. It’s compact, rational, and tuned toward creating a balanced weight distribution — exactly what the tandem layout is trying to highlight.

The idea is simple: keep mass aligned through the center, reduce compromise, sharpen the response. In theory, it gives the car more predictable handling, which fits Dallara’s long reputation for engineering precision.


Design Language

Damocles doesn’t read as flamboyant. It’s muscular, but not overdrawn. The surfaces are taut, pulled tight across the structure, with sharp volumes cutting across a sculpted central core. There’s a sense of power in the stance, but also control — almost restrained, as if the design wanted to underline the mechanical intent rather than decorate it.

From some angles, it resembles technical sculpture more than a car styled for the showroom. That’s part of the value in student work: freedom to explore function with form still secondary, yet still visually compelling.
