2025 Haval Big Dog PLUS

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Powertrain lineup carries over: 1.5-liter turbo (184 hp, FWD) or 2.0-liter turbo (238 hp, AWD).

  • New raised ride height and DIY-friendly design elements add to its outdoor appeal.

  • Pricing starts at 123,900 yuan (≈USD 17,000), keeping it within reach for budget-minded SUV buyers.

Familiar Shape, Sharper Presence

The Big Dog has always leaned on boxy, upright proportions that stand apart from the crowded crossover field. For 2025, the Big Dog PLUS doesn’t reinvent the silhouette but gives it a more purposeful stance. Extra ground clearance and chunkier trim pieces give it more presence, while new color options and exterior accents underline the rugged pitch. It still wears the visible bolts and cladding that gave the original its charm, but it feels a touch more mature this time.

Two Proven Engines, No Surprises

Under the skin, Haval hasn’t changed the recipe. Buyers still get the choice between two turbocharged petrol engines. The base unit is a 1.5-liter turbo delivering 184 horsepower and 275 Nm, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox sending power to the front wheels. Above that sits the 2.0-liter turbo, producing a healthier 238 horsepower, matched to a 9-speed DCT and all-wheel drive.

Neither engine is new, but both have proven themselves, and the PLUS benefits from its raised ride height, giving them a slightly broader canvas for rougher roads or light off-road work.

Cabin Updates and Smarter Tech

The interior is where the Plus feels fresher. It’s still a practical space, but the digital side of things has been updated. The 14.6-inch Coffee OS display anchors the dash, with faster voice controls and smoother menu layouts. Wireless updates, app integration, and a more flexible interface make it more in line with current expectations.

Trim touches matter, too. Buyers can spec Sportier seating, ambient lighting, a head-up display, and a heated steering wheel. These aren’t luxury extras so much as comfort improvements, but they do shift the Big Dog closer to what buyers in this price bracket increasingly demand.

Size, Practicality, and Positioning

Dimensionally, the Big Dog PLUS stays consistent: 4,705 mm long, 1,908 mm wide, with a 2,810 mm wheelbase. The extra clearance doesn’t change its footprint, but it gives drivers a little more confidence on dirt roads or uneven ground. Haval has also leaned into customization, offering DIY-friendly body parts that can be swapped or accessorized—an approach clearly targeted at younger owners who want a degree of personal expression in their SUV.

Pricing starts at 123,900 yuan (about USD 17,000) for the base trim, with the top end climbing as equipment and engine options increase. That positions it neatly in the sweet spot between entry-level crossovers and pricier, more sophisticated off-roaders.
