A Modern Take on the Slantnose

Gunther Werks used Monterey Car Week to pull the cover off Project F-26, its latest reimagining of Porsche heritage. The Quail was the stage, fittingly, given the event’s reputation as a showcase for boutique builders and ultra-rare cars.

The F-26 pays homage to the Porsche 935 “Slantnose,” one of the more divisive yet iconic shapes in Stuttgart’s back catalog. The name points to both the aggressive, fighter jet-inspired aero and the fact that only 26 cars will be made.

Powertrain: Air-Cooled, Turbocharged, and Extreme

Under the decklid sits a collaboration between Gunther Werks and Rothsport Racing: a 4.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six pushing 1,000 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. That output is unheard of in an air-cooled application.

Cooling is handled by a race-style flat fan that doubles airflow compared to a conventional setup, evening out cylinder temps. Supporting hardware includes a new carbon-fiber airbox, a redesigned intercooler plenum with integrated blow-off valves, and adaptive mapping that allows the engine to run on ethanol or high-octane fuel.

Power goes through a six-speed manual gearbox and limited-slip differential. A 935-inspired exhaust system with exposed wastegates ensures the car sounds as aggressive as it looks.

Built in Carbon Fiber

The F-26 is defined as much by its materials as its power. Gunther Werks has used carbon fiber extensively — from the Slantnose front fascia that eliminates Porsche’s pop-up lights to the high-downforce rear wing, wide side intakes, and re-sculpted fenders.

At just 2,700 pounds curb weight, the car is remarkably light for its output class. The stance is set by magnesium monoblock wheels wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact Force rubber, with massive 335-section rears keeping traction in check.

Chassis and Dynamics

Handling is handled with equal seriousness. Gunther Werks fitted:

• Double-wishbone front suspension
• Adaptive JRZ dampers
• Motorsport-spec ABS
• Advanced traction control

The rear wheelbase has been stretched by 30 mm, lowering the engine’s center of gravity and evening out weight distribution. The result is a car designed for stability under extreme loads, something the Slantnose’s Group 5 ancestors were famous for.

Cabin: Subtle Heritage, Modern Details

Inside, the F-26 balances nods to Porsche history with contemporary appointments. There’s visible carbon fiber throughout, accented by Alcantara and leather. The steering wheel takes inspiration from fighter jets, while a wooden shift knob recalls Porsche’s motorsport past.

Modern usability is covered by a Porsche Classic radio with Apple CarPlay, a small but welcome touch for those who plan to actually drive the car on the road.
