Rethinking the People’s Car for the Electric Age
Dacia has unveiled the Hipster Concept, a 100% electric city car designed from a clean slate — with the goal of making electric mobility genuinely accessible. It’s a compact, pragmatic take on what tomorrow’s popular car should be: efficient, minimalist, and focused purely on everyday needs.
As Romain Gauvin, Head of Advanced and Exterior Design at Dacia, puts it, “This is the most Dacia-esque project I’ve ever worked on. It has the same societal impact as the Logan did 20 years ago.”
In an era where most new cars are heavier, larger, and more complex than ever, Dacia’s approach is a deliberate return to simplicity. The Hipster Concept is positioned as a “people’s EV” — accessible, honest, and designed to cut both cost and carbon footprint.
Compact Size, Big Thinking
Measuring just 3.0 metres long, 1.55 metres wide, and 1.53 metres tall, the Hipster Concept manages to pack in four adult seats and a boot that expands from 70 to 500 litres. Dacia’s design team focused on practicality and modularity, offering genuine usability in an ultra-compact package.
The concept is 20% lighter than the Dacia Spring, already one of the lightest EVs on sale. The company’s “eco-smart” approach means fewer materials, lower manufacturing energy, and ultimately, less energy consumed in motion.
The goal is ambitious: to halve the total carbon footprint across the vehicle’s life cycle compared with the best-performing electric vehicles today
A Simple, Honest Design Language
The Hipster Concept’s exterior embodies Dacia’s philosophy of strength through simplicity. Its design is blocky, upright, and balanced — with wheels pushed to the corners and zero front or rear overhang.
The front fascia is flat and horizontal, featuring narrow, integrated headlights that give it a serious yet approachable character. At the rear, a two-part tailgate runs the full width of the car, making loading and unloading effortless.
One of the concept’s most clever details is its rear light integration — the taillights sit behind the tailgate glass, eliminating the need for a separate housing. Combined with only three painted panels and extensive use of Starkle®, a recycled and mass-dyed material developed by Dacia engineers, the result is an intentionally raw, robust aesthetic that’s both cost-efficient and sustainable
In typical Dacia fashion, functionality comes before form — even the door handles have been replaced by fabric straps, a lighter and cheaper solution that feels true to the brand’s minimalist ethos.
Thoughtfully Spacious Interior
Inside, the Hipster Concept maximizes every centimetre. Its cubic profile allows for excellent headroom and visibility, while the vertical windshield and large glass surfaces create a sense of openness rarely found in cars of this size.
To keep the cabin light and airy, a glazed front roof section lets natural light flood in. The sliding side windows are a nod to simplicity, cutting both cost and weight.
The front bench-style seats recall classic economy cars of the past while saving materials. The visible seat frames and technical mesh upholstery give a functional, tactile feel. Meanwhile, the openwork headrests help trim additional grams — every detail serving the dual goals of efficiency and user-friendliness
Dacia says the driving position mirrors that of the Sandero, meaning comfort and visibility haven’t been sacrificed. Access to the rear is straightforward thanks to a wide-opening front door and tilting passenger seat.
Cargo flexibility is another strength: boot space can expand from 70 to 500 litres, depending on whether the rear seats are folded.
