Design and Proportions of the Vehicle
The A5 Avant continues with the familiar long-roof silhouette that has carried Audi estates for decades, but the proportions in this generation feel slightly more settled. The roofline stretches confidently toward a gently sloped tailgate, with the PHEV packaging tucked cleanly beneath. The designers have left the Avant’s visual identity intact—broad shoulders, a deep glasshouse, and a stance that looks balanced rather than forced.
Although the press material focuses on the hybrid system, the shape still conveys the practical purpose of the Avant: a low load floor, a wide tailgate opening, and a rear section that doesn’t sacrifice form for function. Wheel sizes begin at 18 inches, and the subtle badging on the tail is the main giveaway that this is the e-hybrid variant. The hybrid components sit in the rear section without noticeably affecting exterior proportions.
Performance and Powertrain Overview
At the core is the combination of a 2.0-litre TFSI engine producing 252PS and an electric motor delivering up to 142PS. Together, they produce 299PS and 450Nm, giving the Avant e-hybrid a 0–62mph time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. The electric motor is housed inside the seven-speed S tronic gearbox, allowing smooth transitions between power sources.
The enlarged 25.9kWh battery (20.7kWh net) is the major advancement. With roughly 45% higher capacity, the A5 Avant e-hybrid now offers up to 67 miles of electric range on UK spec. AC charging rises to 11kW, reducing a full charge to around 2.5 hours. Improved regenerative braking captures up to 88kW under deceleration, and the new E3 electronic architecture allows three adjustable recuperation levels via steering-wheel paddles—an increasingly natural way to manage energy on twistier roads or urban descents.
Key Features and Interior Impression
The cabin carries over the familiar A5 layout but with more emphasis on digital interaction. The MMI panoramic display and navigation integrate hybrid controls and energy flows clearly. A new digital slider allows drivers to set a target battery state of charge in hybrid mode—useful for reserving electric driving for city segments later in the journey.
Standard equipment levels remain high: progressive steering, navigation, inductive charging, three-zone climate control, and auxiliary air conditioning. The Avant offers 361 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,306 litres with the seats folded in the standard 40:20:40 split. For towing, the Avant handles up to 1,900kg braked. Practicality remains central to the car’s identity, even with the added hybrid hardware.
