2018 Genesis Essentia Concept

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The Essentia is a fully electric grand tourer, built on a carbon-fiber monocoque and powered by a multi-motor setup capable of 0–60 mph in about 3.0 seconds.

  • Design highlights include a transparent hood, butterfly doors, and Genesis’s signature “Athletic Elegance” proportions.

  • Though never confirmed for production, the concept positioned Genesis firmly in the conversation with Europe’s top-tier luxury marques.

A Concept That Stopped New York in Its Tracks

The Essentia made its debut under the bright lights of the 2018 New York Auto Show, and it immediately caught the industry’s attention. Genesis didn’t arrive with a warmed-over sedan or a predictable crossover — it rolled out a futuristic GT coupe with proportions and detailing that suggested the brand had serious intent. The Essentia was awarded Automobile magazine’s Concept of the Year, recognition that underscored just how unexpected and refined the car really was.

Power Beneath the Carbon Skin

Genesis chose a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque for the Essentia, the sort of engineering normally reserved for exotic brands. Beneath the structure, a multi-motor electric powertrain delivered drive to all four wheels. The battery pack sat in a central tunnel, a choice that lowered the center of gravity and allowed the designers more freedom to sculpt the dramatic body. The figures were suitably ambitious: 0–60 mph in about three seconds.

The message was clear: Genesis wasn’t just talking about electrification — it was prepared to frame it within performance.

Athletic Elegance, Distilled

Design is where the Essentia still lingers in memory. The long hood, set low over the front wheels, stretched into a compact, glass-heavy cabin. The transparent hood itself was more than theater — it revealed the carbon structure and pushrod suspension beneath. The butterfly doors lifted upward, adding a dramatic flourish and easing entry into the low-slung cockpit.

Lighting was handled by laser-etched quad lamps, sharp slivers that extended across the fenders and into the grille, signaling a new face for Genesis. Subtle aero touches, including air curtains integrated into the bodywork, made it as technical as it was beautiful.

Inside a Minimalist Future

Step inside, and the Essentia’s cabin was stripped of clutter but not of craft. Cognac leather in two-tone detailing wrapped the seats and dash, paired with thin, woven panels across the doors. In place of banks of switches, Genesis installed a wide digital display, relying on voice control and haptic feedback to keep the interior sleek.

It was luxury defined differently: less about excess, more about focus.

The Legacy of a One-Off Vision

In concept car history, some designs are forgotten as quickly as they appear. The Essentia is not one of them. It remains a touchstone for Genesis’s design language, a demonstration of how “Athletic Elegance” could play out in a pure, forward-looking form.

Its mix of exotic engineering cues, electric power, and sculptural beauty signaled that Genesis wasn’t just reacting to the EV wave. It was ready to set its own course within it.
