2016 Spyker C8 Preliator

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Limited to 50 units: Each car is hand-built in Coventry with bespoke finishes and Spyker’s trademark exposed gear linkage.

  • Aviation-inspired design: NACA ducts, turbine-like wheels, and gold-coated canopy echo Spyker’s aeronautical roots.

  • Supercharged heart: Audi 4.2-liter V8 delivers 525 hp and a 201 mph top speed.

When the Spyker C8 Preliator debuted at the Geneva International Motor Show, it felt like a statement from another time — one when craftsmanship still mattered more than carbon-counts and lap times. Spyker’s latest creation, hand-built and meticulously detailed, isn’t chasing records or mass appeal. It’s chasing beauty, balance, and a bit of drama.

Named after the Latin word for “fighter,” the Preliator carries a spirit of defiance. Spyker has been through turbulence — financially, structurally, even philosophically — yet somehow keeps resurfacing with something more intricate than before. Founder Victor Muller described it best: “For the tenacious, no road is impassable.” Looking at the car, you believe him

Design That Breathes Aviation

Every curve of the Preliator feels shaped by air and speed. Gone are the shark-like gills of earlier Spykers — replaced by smooth, uninterrupted lines and subtle NACA ducts that feed the supercharged V8 beneath the glass canopy. That canopy, by the way, wears a reflective gold coating borrowed from fighter jets, catching light like a moving sculpture.

Up front, the trademark V-shaped grille has evolved, now supported by a central pillar first seen on the B6 Venator concept. Around back, LED taillights mimic the glow of afterburners, while the 19-inch Turbofan™ wheels complete the “road jet” aesthetic. It’s theatrical but not excessive — the kind of car that demands a slow walkaround before you ever touch the key.

Mechanical Elegance

Underneath, the structure is as advanced as the styling suggests. The aluminum space frame, reengineered for a 10% increase in stiffness, supports Lotus-supplied suspension and keeps weight down to just 1,390 kg. With 525 horsepower from a supercharged Audi V8 and a choice between a six-speed Getrag manual or ZF automatic, performance is as analog as it is formidable — 0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, top speed 322 km/h

It’s easy to imagine the exposed gear linkage, still a Spyker signature, clicking through its narrow gate as the V8 winds toward its 7,200-rpm redline. There’s no hybrid trickery, no digital torque vectoring — just old-school purity honed to modern standards.

Inside, a Cathedral of Leather and Aluminum

Spyker interiors have always been exercises in artistry, and this one is no exception. The Saddle leather cabin with white honeycomb stitching looks more bespoke atelier than factory. Optional Chronoswiss gauges glint against a brushed aluminum dash, while the new Head-Up Display integrates navigation and driver info without cluttering the cabin’s symmetry.

The Fighter Still Flies

In a world where most supercars chase algorithms, the Spyker C8 Preliator feels defiantly human — tactile, deliberate, unapologetically beautiful. Limited to fifty units and priced north of €320,000, it’s not meant for everyone.
