2014 Lamborghini Asterion LPI910-4 Concept

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Lamborghini’s first plug-in hybrid concept, revealed in 2014, pairing a V10 with three electric motors for a combined 910 hp.

  • Offered 50 km of pure electric range, 320 km/h top speed, and 98 g/km CO₂ emissions.

  • Signaled Lamborghini’s early move toward electrification, influencing models like the Revuelto.

A Bold Step Into Hybrid Territory

Back in 2014, Lamborghini stood at a crossroads. Regulators were tightening emissions standards, hybrid tech was creeping into supercar territory, and Sant’Agata knew it couldn’t ignore the shift forever. Enter the Asterion LPI910-4, revealed at the Paris Motor Show.

This wasn’t a rough prototype or a half-hearted compliance study. The Asterion was sleek, polished, and every bit a Lamborghini — but it brought with it something brand-new for the marque: plug-in hybrid power. For a company built on raw, naturally aspirated engines, that was a radical pivot.

Under the Skin: 910 Horsepower of Hybrid Fury

At its heart, the Asterion ran with a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, good for 610 hp on its own. But Lamborghini bolted in three electric motors: one between the engine and dual-clutch gearbox, and two up front for the wheels. The combined system output climbed to 910 hp, hence the “910” in its name.

The figures still impress today:

  • 0–100 km/h in 3.0 seconds
  • Top speed of 320 km/h
  • 50 km of all-electric range
  • 98 g/km CO₂ emissions

That last number might not stir the soul like a screaming V10, but in 2014 it showed Lamborghini was looking seriously at sustainability. Fuel consumption sat at 4.12 L/100 km (NEDC) — hardly Prius territory, but groundbreaking for something that could also clear 320 km/h.

Engineering Choices That Mattered

Of course, stuffing batteries and motors into a carbon monocoque meant extra mass — about 250 kg more than a conventional Lamborghini. But Lamborghini used that weight smartly. The lithium-ion battery was placed down the central tunnel, which not only protected it in the event of a crash but also helped with balance.

The twin electric motors on the front axle did more than add grunt — they worked as a torque vectoring system, trimming understeer and sharpening the car’s responses. The result was a grand tourer that promised both straight-line fireworks and refined, predictable handling.

Design: Softer Edges, Same DNA

The Asterion didn’t look like an Aventador or a Huracán, and that was the point. Designed in-house at Lamborghini Centro Stile, it adopted a more flowing, almost understated shape. Instead of razor-sharp wedges, you got curvier surfacing and a fastback rear.

Even so, Lamborghini DNA was everywhere. The hexagonal intakes, the Y-shaped lighting elements, the transparent engine cover showing off its V10, and the stance — low, wide, and unapologetically purposeful. The Blue Elektra paint gave it an elegance that matched its GT brief.

Inside, the Asterion went against the grain too. Seats trimmed in ivory Bianco Celaeno leather with brown Marrone Attis highlights created a cabin that was more lounge-like than fighter jet. The driving position sat higher than in other Lambos, underlining its grand touring focus.

And then there was the steering wheel, which doubled as a control hub. Three buttons let you flick between Zero (EV), Ibrido (hybrid), and Termico (engine) modes. Simple, effective, very Lamborghini.
