2009 Volkswagen Concept BlueSport

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • The 2009 Volkswagen Concept BlueSport features a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a 2.0 litre TDI engine producing 180 PS (132 kW) and 350 Nm torque.

  • The roadster measures approx. 3,990 mm in length, 1,745 mm in width and 1,260 mm in height, riding on 20-inch wheels and targeting a weight around 1,200 kg.

  • Positioned as a sporty yet efficient concept, the BlueSport achieved 0-100 km/h in about 6.6 seconds and claimed fuel consumption of 4.3 litres/100 km with CO₂ emissions of 113 g/km.

Design and Proportions of the Concept BlueSport

The Volkswagen Concept BlueSport presents itself as a compact two-seater roadster, adhering to a mid-engine layout with rear-wheel drive — a departure from Volkswagen’s usual front-engine architecture. The 3.99 metre length gives the body significantly constrained overhangs, crystalline front and rear arches and an athletic stance.

Visually, the roofline is low at 1,260 mm and the width at 1,745 mm gives the car a planted footprint. Wheels are large by size for the vehicle class, further highlighting the sport-car intent. The cabin is moved forward, allowing the engine bay to sit behind the occupants, echoing sports-car traditions. Triangular side intakes and minimal roof thickness underscore the mid-engine design view.
The design language is clean and reduced: surfaces flow without excess ornamentation, and the overall form emphasises function rather than decoration. In grey-silver finish with contrasting elements, the concept locates itself visually between practicality and performance.

Performance, Chassis and Drivetrain

At the heart of the BlueSport is a 2.0 litre turbo-charged TDI diesel engine, rated at approximately 180 PS (~132 kW) and delivering around 350 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. The 0-100 km/h time is quoted at about 6.6 seconds and the top speed at around 226 km/h (140 mph) when tested under concept conditions.
Fuel consumption was targeted at 4.3 litres per 100 km and CO₂ emissions at 113 g/km thanks to the lightweight body, Eco-mode start/stop system and energy regeneration.

The chassis incorporates a clean layout: short overhangs, wheels at corners, and a central battery or engine location for ideal weight distribution. The engineers cited a 45:55 front-to-rear weight split in some documentation.

Suspension geometry appears to use independent systems front and rear with sport tyre setups. The combination of mid-engine placement, rear drive and lightweight construction lends the car a purely dynamic focus.
