Maserati GranSport Spyder Makes Its North American Debut

The 2006 Maserati GranSport Spyder has made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, bringing the mechanical and styling changes of the GranSport coupe to Maserati's open-top sports car.

Presented alongside the Quattroporte Sport GT, the GranSport Spyder arrives as Maserati continues to expand its presence in North America.

The convertible retains the familiar proportions of the existing Spyder but introduces a lower stance, revised aerodynamic elements and an updated V8 powertrain.

For Maserati, the emphasis is on carrying the GranSport coupe's driving characteristics into a convertible without losing the character of the original car.

Lowered Suspension and Revised Aerodynamic Bodywork

The GranSport Spyder sits 10 mm lower than the standard model, giving the convertible a more planted appearance.

A pronounced lower front spoiler is one of the most noticeable changes, accompanied by side bars integrated into the bodywork.

Both elements contribute to the car's aerodynamic development while retaining the established Spyder silhouette.

The open-top configuration separates the GranSport Spyder visually from its coupe counterpart, although much of the performance-focused exterior treatment remains shared.

Maserati has not disclosed revised body dimensions or aerodynamic coefficients in the announcement.

19 Inch Alloy Wheels Inspired by Trofeo Racing

The GranSport Spyder uses 19-inch alloy wheels featuring a design derived from Maserati's Trofeo Championship racing cars.

The wheels are paired with specially developed tyres featuring a profile intended to improve steering response and agility.

Their design provides a direct visual connection to Maserati's competition programme, complementing the lower suspension and revised bodywork.

These changes are intended to sharpen the car's road behaviour without altering its fundamental grand touring layout.

400 HP V8 and Faster Gear Changes

Under the bonnet, the GranSport Spyder uses an updated version of Maserati's 4.2-litre V8 engine.

Output reaches 400 hp, accompanied by 333 lb-ft of torque.

The engine is paired with a transaxle transmission layout, placing the gearbox near the rear differential to improve weight distribution between the axles.

Revised transmission software delivers gear changes averaging 35% faster than the preceding system.

Maserati has also developed a dedicated exhaust arrangement, giving the V8 a deeper sound under acceleration.

Leather, BrighTex and Carbon Fibre Interior

Inside, the GranSport Spyder combines traditional leather upholstery with materials drawn from Maserati's racing programme.

The upper dashboard is leather-trimmed, while the centre section uses BrighTex, a technical fabric also featured in the Maserati MC12 racing car.

Piping separates the dashboard sections, creating a contrast between the two materials.

Carbon fibre trim adds another motorsport reference, completing the cabin's performance-oriented finish.

March 2006 Sales and Maserati's North American Expansion

The GranSport Spyder is scheduled to go on sale in March 2006.

Its arrival follows a record year for Maserati North America, which delivered 2,100 vehicles in 2005, representing a 53% increase over 2004.

California remains Maserati's largest American market, with Los Angeles leading sales within the state.

The GranSport Spyder expands the company's open-top sports car offering at a time when North American demand is becoming increasingly important to the Italian manufacturer.
