1989 Porsche 944 Turbo Coupe

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 250 hp and around 350 Nm of torque.

  • Transaxle layout gave the 944 Turbo balanced handling and high-speed composure.

  • 1989 model introduced refinements that keep it highly regarded among collectors today.

Built for the Fast Lane of the Late ’80s

By the time 1989 rolled around, the Porsche 944 had already proven itself as a well-rounded sports coupe. But the Turbo — internally known as the 951 — took that base and pushed it further. More power, sharper suspension, stronger brakes. It was still a comfortable GT, but one engineered to keep pace with some of the quickest cars on sale at the time.

It was assembled in Neckarsulm, with engineering input from Porsche’s racing projects. In the lineup, it sat just below the 911, but in real-world terms it could embarrass plenty of more expensive machinery.

Design with a Purpose

The 944 Turbo looked familiar to anyone who’d seen a standard 944, but the details gave it away. The nose sat lower, the front fascia was deeper to feed the intercooler, and the fog lamps were neatly integrated. Pop-up headlights kept the profile clean.

Its flared wheel arches housed wider tyres for more grip, while the rear spoiler and smoothed bumpers improved stability. Porsche paid close attention to airflow, bringing the drag coefficient down to around 0.33 — impressive for a wide-bodied coupe in 1989.

Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Performance

The 2.5-litre inline-four under the hood wasn’t just a standard 944 engine with a turbo bolted on. It had an aluminium block and head, a single overhead cam, and a K26 turbocharger feeding through an intercooler. For 1989, power climbed to 250 hp with torque around 350 Nm.

The numbers translated to a 0–100 km/h time in the mid-5-second range and a top speed of about 260 km/h. The boost delivery was smoother than in earlier years thanks to revised engine management, making it quicker to respond when you pressed the throttle.

Power went to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle mounted at the back, keeping the weight balanced across both axles.

Balanced Chassis and Confident Braking

The 944 Turbo’s real strength was how it felt in a corner. The transaxle layout gave it an almost perfect 50:50 weight split, and the suspension tuning matched that balance. MacPherson struts in front, semi-trailing arms in the rear, and stiffer springs paired with Koni adjustable dampers gave it composure without punishing ride quality.

Brembo supplied the ventilated disc brakes, with four-piston calipers that could take hard, repeated use without fade. Many testers at the time noted that the braking performance rivalled — or even bettered — Porsche’s own 911.

A Driver-Focused Cabin

Step inside and you could tell the 944 Turbo was built for someone who planned to use it. The dashboard was simple, the gauges easy to read, and the sport seats offered proper support without feeling cramped.

Standard features included air conditioning, power windows, and a solid-sounding audio system. Buyers could add leather upholstery, a limited-slip differential, or other extras to suit their driving style. Even the interior materials, from the switchgear to the carpeting, carried the feeling of something built to last.

On the Road in Period

In testing, the 1989 944 Turbo kept pace with plenty of six- and eight-cylinder competitors. Acceleration was strong, but it was the stability at speed that really stood out. Long highway runs were effortless, and when the road turned twisty, the steering feedback and chassis balance gave it an advantage over heavier rivals.

The braking system deserved as much credit as the turbo engine — predictable pedal feel, short stopping distances, and no drama even under repeated hard use. For many owners, that combination of performance and everyday usability made it a car they could drive often, not just on weekends.
