1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 W201

By Lorenzo Bianchi

  • Cosworth-developed 2.3-liter 16-valve engine defined its character.

  • Iconic in DTM racing and tested by Ayrton Senna before his F1 career took off.

  • Compact sedan format proved Mercedes could go toe-to-toe with BMW’s M3.

A Sedan with Racing in Its DNA

The 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 didn’t look outrageous on the surface. Square, compact, and disciplined in its proportions, it carried the same restrained design as the standard W201 sedan. But the details revealed something different. A subtle body kit stretched over its edges, a neatly integrated rear spoiler sat on the trunk, and the ride height dropped just enough to signal intent.

This wasn’t another executive commuter. It was Mercedes staking a claim in a segment already being defined by BMW’s M3. And it did so with a weapon under the hood: a 2.3-liter four-cylinder tuned by Cosworth, its 16-valve head allowing the engine to rev higher and breathe harder than any Stuttgart sedan had before. Output was around 185 horsepower at launch, enough to give the 190E sharper teeth without overwhelming its chassis.

Seen in period press shots, the car has a clean stance. Not wide, not bulky, but balanced. The cladding along the rockers makes it appear lower and more planted. The spoiler, though modest by today’s standards, was functional — adding stability at autobahn speeds and, later, on the racetrack.

Inside, the cabin was businesslike. Supportive sport seats, a thick-rimmed steering wheel, and subtle touches separated it from a base 190, but it never strayed into flamboyance. That restraint is part of its appeal now.

Motorsport Pedigree

The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 gained instant credibility in 1984 when Ayrton Senna won the Nürburgring Race of Champions in one against a field of established F1 drivers. That moment alone cemented its reputation. Mercedes would soon build the 2.5-liter Evolution models for DTM, but the 2.3-16 was the seed. It showed Mercedes could fight on track with a compact sedan.

Ayrton Senna and the 190E

The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16’s reputation received an unexpected boost in 1984, before the model even reached full production. Mercedes organized the Nürburgring “Race of Champions” to inaugurate a new section of the Grand Prix track. The field was stacked with Formula One greats — Lauda, Prost, Rosberg, and others — all piloting identical 190E 2.3-16s. A young Ayrton Senna, then largely unknown outside junior categories, outdrove them all in the rain. His victory in a Mercedes road car against established legends became a defining moment, both for his career and for the 190E’s credibility. That single race embedded the car in motorsport history and gave it a narrative far beyond the showroom.
