Lucid Motors Experiences Sales Boost as Tesla Owners Switch
Tesla’s Shifting Market Opens Doors for Lucid
For years, Tesla dominated the electric vehicle (EV) market, attracting early adopters eager for cutting-edge technology. However, recent market shifts—fueled by Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s polarizing decisions and evolving product strategies—have driven some customers to explore alternatives. One standout beneficiary of this shift? Lucid Motors.
The Los Angeles-based EV manufacturer has reported a significant rise in orders, particularly from former Tesla customers, for its newest model, the Gravity SUV. With production set to begin in April, Lucid is positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the expanding EV landscape.
Tesla’s Troubles Are Lucid’s Gain
Lucid’s acting CEO, Marc Winterhoff, acknowledges Tesla’s role in fueling Lucid’s growth. Speaking at the Gravity SUV launch in New York, he stated:
"Tesla customers always were the drivers of our sales because they were already accustomed to having electrical drivetrains, and they seek an opportunity to have something other, something new. And now, with changes that have been made recently, naturally, since the start of the year, we see absolutely a surge in interest in Lucid from Tesla buyers because they seek another option."
This shift comes amid turbulent times for Tesla. Slowing Model Y sales and Musk’s involvement in politically charged controversies have prompted some Tesla buyers to look elsewhere. A YouGov and Yahoo News survey found that 67% of Americans would no longer consider buying a Tesla, citing concerns over Musk’s leadership.
Lucid Gravity: A Tesla Rival in the SUV Market
Lucid’s expansion into the SUV segment with the Gravity marks a crucial step in broadening its market reach. While the Lucid Air sedan has already attracted luxury EV buyers, SUVs dominate the U.S. market, providing Lucid with a larger customer base.
Winterhoff emphasized the significance of this move:
"Americans want to own an SUV. That's the classic American automobile, the dimensions of the pickup truck. It's a far bigger addressable market for us, and hence much bigger demand."
With a starting price of $79,900, the Gravity SUV is a high-end but competitive alternative to Tesla’s Model X and other premium electric SUVs. Additionally, its pricing falls just below the federal EV tax credit threshold, making it an even more attractive option for buyers.
Competitive Edge: Made in the USA
Lucid also benefits from its U.S.-based production in Arizona. With 25% import tariffs imposed on foreign EVs, domestic manufacturing gives Lucid a pricing advantage over international competitors in the luxury EV segment.
The Future of Lucid Motors
Lucid aims to produce 20,000 vehicles in 2024, with the Gravity SUV leading its sales push. While Tesla remains the dominant EV player, Lucid’s recent surge in demand suggests that a growing number of former Tesla owners see it as a compelling alternative.
With increasing production capacity, a strong luxury appeal, and an evolving EV market, Lucid Motors is solidifying its place as a key contender in the electric vehicle industry.
