2023 Mazda CX-60 Homura UK Version

The all-new Mazda CX-60 expands Mazda's award-winning SUV range, joining the UK line-up above the ever-popular 2022 Mazda CX-5. The new flagship SUV is launched with Mazda's first plug-in hybrid technology powertrain, which combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129 kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery.

This combination of engine and motor delivers a total system output of 327ps and an abundant torque output of 500Nm - making it the most powerful road car Mazda has ever produced. Mazda's first PHEV also displays outstanding environmental credentials with WLTP combined fuel consumption of 188mpg and WLTP combined CO2 emissions of only 33g/km.

The Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV offers 39.15 miles of combined electric motor-powered driving with the vehicle running at 62mph or less, while the performance of the combined drivetrain delivers a 0-62mph performance of just 5.8 seconds.

The imposing strength of the Mazda CX-60's beautiful and dynamic styling conveys the intelligence and elegance of the latest developments in Kodo design woven into the toughness of the striking front-engine, rear-wheel drive SUV architecture. Offered in the UK in three highly specified trim grades: Exclusive-Line, Homura and Takumi, customer choice is further enhanced with the ability to add two option packs across all grades: Convenience Pack and Driver Assistance Pack, with a Comfort Pack available on Exclusive-Line. An additional option to specify a Panoramic roof on Homura and Takumi models is also a Mazda first.

The Mazda CX-60 Exclusive-Line can be matched to all three of the option packs to offer maximum customer choice and complement the extensive CX-60 standard equipment tally. The Homura is visually distinguished from the Exclusive-Line by body coloured wheel arch mouldings and a dark plated signature wing grille surround, plus gloss black mirrors and honeycomb grille treatment, while 20-inch black alloy wheels finish the stand out exterior look. Inside, the Homura grade features seat heating for the outer rear seats and ambient lighting, plus it's equipped with the ground-breaking Mazda Driver Personalisation System that will recognise the occupant of the driver's seat via facial recognition and automatically adjust the surroundings - seat position, steering wheel, mirrors, head-up display, even the sound and climate control settings - to fit their physique as well as their personal preferences. There's also the option to add the Convenience Pack and Driver Assistance Pack to the Mazda CX-60 Homura.

At the top of the all-new Mazda CX-60 range is the Takumi, which features 20-inch black machined alloy wheels and body-coloured mirrors, combined with chrome plated signature wing grille treatment and side window surround, while the gloss black bar type radiator grille design is another feature unique to this flagship grade. Like the Homura, there's the option to add the Convenience Pack and Driver Assistance Pack. Highlights in the Convenience Pack include privacy glass, 360 view monitor with see through view and wireless phone charging, while the Driver Assistance Pack adds a large tally of additional active safety technology.

The Comfort Pack is only offered with the Exclusive-Line, but adds high-grade features like 20-inch alloy wheels, electric front seats, front seat ventilation, rear seat heaters and the Mazda Driver Personalisation System technology. Across all three models in the CX-60 range there is a choice of eight body colours including the new Rhodium White premium metallic paint.

Uniquely Mazda, the CX-60's interior achieves the very highest standards of craftmanship combined with new technologies and human centric ergonomics to deliver a premium interior rooted in Japanese heritage. The elegant, premium quality interior design introduces the ideas of Kaichou - an element of disruption which mixes different materials and textures. With the flagship Takumi grade, materials such as maple wood, nappa leather combine with uniquely worked Japanese textiles and chrome details, and Musubu - the art of binding which was the inspiration for the specially detailed instrument panel stitching.

The treatment of the maple wood trim reflects the Japanese aesthetic of Hacho - asymmetrical balance, or intentional unevenness. The woven fabrics' diverse patterns and yarns respond sensitively to changes in light, and a Japanese stitching technique called Kakenui creates 'hanging stitching' seams with spaces between the trim fabrics revealing a glimpse of the material beneath.

The Mazda CX-60 shares the same carefully considered cockpit design found in all Mazda cars, with a symmetrical layout focused on the driver with the aim of delivering the uniquely Mazda sense of being at one with the car. Yet at the same time, the Mazda CX-60 offers new levels of comfort and space for passengers, while the 570-litre^ boot ensures it's the most practical car in Mazda's line up.

The all-new Mazda CX-60 delivers the driver engagement and vehicle dynamics you'd expect of a Mazda. Compatible with the CX-60's longitudinal front-engine rear-wheel drive mechanical layout, Mazda's Skyactiv Scalable Architecture is matched to excellent bodyshell rigidity and a double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension set-up to deliver a first-rate driving experience.

Additionally, the CX-60 also features Mazda's Kinetic Posture Control technology which further stabilises vehicle posture when cornering by undetectably braking the inside rear wheel to mitigate roll and the draw the car body downwards, while positioning the high-voltage battery between the front and rear axles and as low as possible, further helps the CX-60's centre of gravity and stability.

The all-new Mazda CX-60 PHEV's e-Skyactiv powertrain is mated to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission and Mazda's i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system. While the Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) offers a choice of drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV, with the latter making it possible to drive under electric power alone. While across each of the driving modes the Mi-Drive system is designed to provide optimum control and driving pleasure in every driving scenario.

A comprehensive range of advanced i-Activsense driver assistance systems ensures active safety at the highest level, too. Several new technologies debut in the Mazda CX-60: See-Through View - a next-generation 360-degree monitor with extended field of view at low speeds; Hill Descent Control (HDC), which assists in safely descending steep slopes with slippery or rough road surfaces; Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC), which can now incorporate speed limits from Traffic Sign Recognition.

The all-new Mazda CX-60 is the first of two new models from the company's Large Product group to be introduced throughout Europe during the next two years, with the second being the three-row Mazda CX-80. In addition, joining the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv PHEV drivetrain in the CX-60 line-up at a later date will be two brand new Mazda engines that have been developed using the 'right sizing' concept which calls for optimised displacement for improved fuel and power efficiency.

The new generation straight-six 3.0-litre e-Skyactiv X petrol and 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engines, which feature M Hybrid Boost - Mazda's 48V mild hybrid system - combine high output with excellent fuel economy and emissions performance, they will join the CX-60 range in the future. Both powerplants are mated to the same eight-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system as the PHEV, but the e-Skyactiv D diesel unit and the e-Skyactiv X petrol engine have also been developed to be equipped with rear-wheel drive only.

The all-new Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV heralds a new chapter in Mazda's successful SUV history and joins the battery electric Mazda MX-30, Mazda M Hybrid mild-hybrid equipped Mazda CX-30 and recently updated 2022 Mazda CX-5 in Mazda's comprehensive SUV line-up.

Styling

Having made its debut on a production car in 2012 with the launch of the first-generation Mazda CX-5, Mazda's Kodo - Soul of Motion design philosophy has evolved over the last decade and now with the all-new Mazda CX-60 the company took on the challenge of creating an SUV design that would not only reflect the enhancement of Kodo, but also visually confirm the CX-60's longitudinal front-engine, rear-wheel drive SUV architecture.

Additionally, the aim of Mazda's designers was to ensure the Mazda CX-60's exterior design was recognisable as a premium SUV that could only have been 'Crafted in Japan'. Conceived under the design concept of 'Noble Toughness', the imposing strength of the Mazda CX-60's beautiful and dynamic styling conveys the intelligence and elegance of the latest evolution of Kodo design, which is influenced by the Japanese concept of Ma - the calm and dignified beauty of empty space.

The CX-60's deeply sculpted grille, long nose and truncated sporty rear silhouette create powerful and dynamic proportions that hint towards the rear driven chassis and longitudinal engine layout of the CX-60. Combining this presence with the simple beauty and elegance of Kodo design has created an SUV with a tough yet dignified exterior that features the stand-out looks demanded in this premium sector.

Across the three trim levels offered in the UK, there are small areas of distinction to ensure that each model has its own look and customers can have a CX-60 suited to them. The Exclusive-Line features 18-inch grey alloy wheels and dark wheel arch mouldings combined with a chrome finish to the signature wing grille surround and front wing side gills, while the grille itself is a gloss black bar type.

The Mazda CX-60 Homura takes on a sportier look with body coloured wheel arch mouldings, 20-inch metallic black alloy wheels and a gloss black honeycomb style grille combined with gloss black door mirrors and side gill trims. The Homura look is finished off with dark plated finish for the signature wing grille surround. For the flagship Takumi, the elegant look of this range-topper is set off by a gloss black bar type grille with chrome finish signature wing surround. The 20-inch wheels feature a two-tone black and silver metallic machined look, while body coloured mirrors and silver side gills also mark out the range-topping Takumi and give a hint to its luxurious interior and stunning cabin materials.

From the very beginning of Kodo design the aim of this, now multi award-winning, styling philosophy was to achieve the concept of 'breathing life into a car' by creating a form in which the car is a moving object that resembles a living creature running at full speed. Its framework expresses stability, much as a living organism uses its skeletal structure and muscles to firmly grip the ground - this is the essence of Kodo design. The Mazda CX-60 uses its strong form to convey a sporty stance on the road when viewed from any angle, giving this flagship SUV a look that highlights just how far Kodo design has come over the last decade.

Complementing the simple beauty of the CX-60's proportions and Kodo surfaces, Mazda's designers and clay modellers made sure Mazda's newest SUV had the attention to styling detail you'd expect from Mazda's award-winning design team. The front grille adopts an adjusted aspect ratio that shows off the height of the grille more than other Mazdas, while for the first time, the signature wing now features an indicator incorporated into it to further accentuate the powerful look of the grille. The front lamp design is also new for Mazda, unlike previous models, the headlight arrangement features vertically stacked lamps and an L-shaped lighting signature to create a new expression that conveys the strength of an SUV and is perfectly matched to the CX-60's style and proportions.

View the Mazda CX-60 in profile and the relatively rearward positioning of the cabin lends the vehicle a dynamic sense of movement and highlights the longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive architecture. Viewed from the side, the CX-60's sense of strength is enlivened by elegant surfacing that creates an elegant streak of light that reflects downwards from the cabin's rear edge and grazes the rear wheel arch before reaching the ground. In line with the CX-60's 'Crafted in Japan' creative inspiration, this surface treatment and its simple yet powerful motion, relates to a boldness seen in Japanese calligraphy.

Other details unique to the CX-60, and not seen on a Mazda before, include the side gill signature trim that reflects the practice of adding an emblem to the front wings of sports cars. Featuring the letters 'PHEV' to highlight the CX-60's drivetrain they are silver on Exclusive-Line and Takumi and black on the Homura. The rear lighting signature adapts an L-shaped design to match that of the front light clusters, while the widely spread consecutive horizontal rear light design creates a high-class lighting signature appropriate to a premium SUV.

The Mazda CX-60 is offered with a choice of eight body colours: Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Sonic Silver, Platinum Quartz, Artic White, Machine Grey, Rhodium White and Soul Red Crystal. Created through a further evolution of Mazda's Takuminuri painting technology, the new Rhodium White colour makes its debut on the CX-60. The choice of a new white colour came from the Japanese aesthetic belief that less is more, creating the image of a machine focused on the dense luminosity of metal. In contrast to a conventional white pearl finish, Rhodium White has a hard shine with an even more dense particle texture, accentuating the Mazda CX-60's form.

A welcome addition to the Mazda range from September 2022, the new Mazda CX-60 is the very latest evolution of Kodo design and represents the very best of Mazda design.

Interior

Step inside the Mazda CX-60 and the interior design follows the example of the exterior by expressing new levels of premium quality and design, while living the 'Crafted in Japan' inspiration with materials and design techniques inspired by traditional Japanese craftmanship. The sense of spaciousness is reinforced by a dashboard that features continuous lines that run through the side air vents into the door trim.

As you expect from Mazda, the design of the cabin has carefully considered driver comfort and the connection with the car that is very essence of the 'Jinba-Ittai' - the oneness between car and driver ethos found in every Mazda. The CX-60 has a horizontally symmetrical layout centred on the driver that offers an ergonomically excellent driving position that feels natural and supportive. The development of an all-new slim eight-speed automatic gearbox has minimised transmission tunnel width, allowing for the ideal pedal and seat placement with more than enough knee space for drivers of all builds. In addition, the Mazda CX-60 (from Homura grade onwards) is the first Mazda to feature electric steering wheel adjustment and has 45mm of rake and 70mm of reach adjustment.

Compared to the Mazda CX-5, the centre armrest is 230mm longer and 37mm wider, while the Multimedia Commander control knob for the Mazda Connect system has been moved forward by 132mm and raised by 82mm to allow for easier operation with your arm in a natural resting position. Furthermore, the door armrests and the centre armrest are set at the same height for ergonomic symmetry and maximum passenger comfort.

Another new feature linked to driver comfort is the all-new Mazda Driver Personalisation System, which comprises three functions: an automated driving position guide, automatic setting restoration and ingress/egress assistance. Standard on Homura and Takumi grades (and optional on Exclusive-Line as part of the Comfort Pack) the Mazda Driver Personalisation System, uses the camera inside the cabin and facial recognition technology to deliver its clever functionality. It includes a function that automatically adjusts driver position based on the driver's physique. It can also use facial recognition to automatically restore the chosen saved seating and other vehicle setting preferences each time you climb into the driver's seat.

In addition to the focus on the physical driving position of the driver, Mazda's cabin designers have ensured just as much work has gone into ensuring that the CX-60 has the very best instrument display and central screen set ups. The driver's cockpit area features three main instrument displays: a full TFT-LCD instrument binnacle, a large colour head-up display and a 12.3-inch centre infotainment screen. The TFT driver's information screen/binnacle has been enlarged to 12.3 inches and in addition to displaying digital dials, driver assist modes, warning displays and Mi-Drive mode displays, it also features a dynamic start-up mode and supports the Mazda Driver Personalisation System.

The CX-60's Active Driving Display colour windscreen projecting head-up display is three times larger than the display in the CX-30, while the 12.3-inch centre infotainment screen is the largest yet on a Mazda. Featuring the latest version of Mazda Connect, which includes enhancements such as a quicker start up and improved resolution it's easy to use for the driver or passenger thanks to the intuitive Mazda Connect commander control knob. The combination of the screen and the controller ensures easy and instinctive use of all entertainment, navigation, settings, information and communication menus.

An equally important part of the CX-60's driver focused ergonomics is excellent visibility, with the shape of the bonnet designed to make it easier to see the leading edge of the car, in fact the bonnet's diagonal forward visibility threshold (the amount of road surface hidden by the vehicle corner diagonally opposite the driver) has been shortened by 303mm compared to the smaller CX-5, while the forward visibility threshold (the amount of road hidden by the vehicle directly in front of the driver) has also been shortened by 100mm. In addition the base of the of the A-Pillar has been given a large curved shape to make it easier to see at junctions.

When it comes to passenger space and luggage capacity, the CX-60's 2,870mm wheelbase and 1,680mm height guarantees this is Mazda's most practical SUV to date. With 44mm more shoulder room in the front seats than the CX-5, in the rear the increase over the smaller CX-5 is 50mm. The rear seats have been designed to ensure passengers have enough legroom to sit comfortably and move without the need to twist their lower body.

Including the underfloor storage, the CX-60 has a 570-litre boot, and loaded to the roofline, a maximum seats down capacity of 1,726 litres. Compared to the CX-5, the width of the tailgate opening is 35mm wider, while to make loading easier the height difference between the boot floor and the tailgate lip has been minimised. As with the CX-5, the CX-60 features 40:20:40 folding rear seats with quick release levers in the boot and a Karakuri tonneau cover for security. The CX-60 boot also features a 12v power socket, while the optional Convenience Pack on Homura and Takumi adds a three-pin 1500w AC socket. Across all models, the CX-60 also features a hands free power tailgate as standard.

Drivetrain & Engine

The Mazda CX-60 launches with the company's first Plug In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) drivetrain. The CX-60 adopts Mazda's Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture for its longitudinal power units, this makes it possible to take further steps in electrification and satisfy environmental requirements with the company's newly developed in-line six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines when they join the PHEV in the line-up at a later date.

The Mazda CX-60's longitudinal powertrain format offers many advantages. These include the ability to mount motors and batteries of different sizes in the same layout for both the soon to be launched Mazda M Hybrid Boost six-cylinder diesel and petrol models and the PHEV. The CX-60's design also provides the facility to place the motor on the same axis as the engine and transmission. The Mazda CX-60 powertrain line-up will feature three new powertrains: Mazda's first PHEV - a 2.5 litre, four-cylinder e-Skyactiv G petrol unit with electrification technology from launch and, at a later date, two straight-six engines: a 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel unit and a 3.0-litre e-Skyactiv X petrol engine. All three powerplants are mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission and Mazda's i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system. The e-Skyactiv D diesel unit and the e-Skyactiv X petrol engine may also be equipped with rear-wheel drive only.

Launching exclusively with the 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain, the Mazda CX-60 is Mazda's first PHEV powertrain and it combines a modified version of the Skyactiv-G 2.5, four-cylinder direct injection petrol engine found in the CX-5 with a 129kW electric motor and a 355V, 17.8 kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery. The petrol engine develops a maximum power output of 191ps at 6000rpm and 261Nm of torque, while the electric motor delivers 175ps and 270 Nm of torque at 400rpm.

With intake tuning to improve torque at the most frequently used mid-to low-speed ranges, this combination of engine and motor delivers a total system output of 327ps and abundant torque of 500Nm, making it the most powerful road car Mazda has ever produced. As a result the Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV accelerates to 60mph in just 5.8seconds.

Conversely, and most notably when running on electric motor power alone, the new Mazda PHEV displays outstanding environmental credentials. WLTP combined fuel consumption is just 188mpg and WLTP combined CO2 emissions only 33g/km. Additionally, the Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV offers 39-miles of electric motor-powered driving with the vehicle running at 62mph or less. With normal AC charging, the battery can be fully charged from empty to full in 2hours and 20 minutes.

All Mazda CX-60s feature Mazda's new eight-speed automatic transmission, which delivers smooth and responsive gear shifting with clear gear steps, achieving the right balance of dynamic and environmental performance. The new transmission shifts gears in the same manner as a torque converter transmission - via planetary gears and multi-plate clutches but it does not have an hydraulic converter as an input clutch, instead it has a multi-plate clutch as well as an integrated electric motor/generator. By replacing the torque converter with a clutch, the torque of the engine and motor is transmitted directly, with fast and rhythmic shifting much like a manual transmission. In addition, the clutch's friction transmission and cooling functions have been evolved to achieve smooth starting and high efficiency.

The Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv PHEV's hybrid powertrain allows for the independent power mixing of the petrol engine and electric motor, and the new transmission helps to implement this smoothly at all speeds. The compact design of Mazda's unique eight-speed transmission and the optimal layout of the entire powertrain effects a smaller transmission tunnel space, minimising the impact on the pedal box space and cabin space.

Standard on all three models in the PHEV range, the CX-60 also features Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive). It offers a choice of five drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off-road, Towing and EV. The aim being to optimise grip, traction, performance, handling and safety in the widest range of driving environments. Each Mi-Drive mode is signified by a change in the TFT driver display, with Sport moving to a red colour and Towing a brown tint, for example.

In Normal mode the system pursues the best balance of fuel efficiency and driving performance for everyday driving. Switching to Sport sees throttle and transmission responsiveness increased to support sportier driving, while the all-wheel drive system increases its clamping force to improve cornering traction. Selecting Off-Road optimes the all-wheel drive system and traction control to deliver traction optimised characteristics for driving on lose surfaces or snow. This mode also offers an 'off-road traction assist' function to help drivers free the car if it is stuck in mud or snow.

With a 2,500kg braked trailer rating, the Mazda CX-60 will be perfect for customers wanting to tow a trailer or caravan and in Towing mode the CX-60's AWD system is optimised for power delivery with extra weight and improved straight-line stability while towing. And for the PHEV, EV mode makes it possible to drive under electric power alone, ideal for cities or areas with a zero emissions mandate.

Perfectly matched to Mazda's all-new eight-speed automatic transmission, the CX-60's i-Activ all-wheel drive system makes use of the rear-wheel drive-based AWD platform to maintain the balanced cornering characteristics of rear-wheel drive with the added stability of all-wheel drive. The PHEV's hybrid system and the AWD system works with the regenerative braking to optimise front and rear wheel regenerative distribution so more energy can be recovered from all four tyres during deceleration.

Joining the CX-60 line up in early 2023, Mazda's all-new 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D in-line six-cylinder diesel engine makes its debut in the flagship SUV. Developed in line with Mazda's right-sizing approach it is available with a choice of two power outputs: 200ps and 254ps. As well as enhancing output performance through increased engine capacity, Mazda has designed the unit to use surplus air to improve combustion. A new, highly innovative, advanced combustion technology - DCPCI (Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition) - further improves engine efficiency, results in a more agile acceleration response and increases thermal efficiency by over 40% for a considerable part of the practical operating range.

One technology in particular ensures all surplus air is used during combustion, regardless of engine speed: the combustion chamber with egg-shaped piston head divides the air-fuel mixture into two regions within the piston bowl, resulting in a more efficient combustion over a wider operating range. A reduction in sound is also achieved due to an ideal combustion period with highly dispersed spray pattern. Together, these two factors contribute significantly to the Mazda CX-60's outstanding efficiency.

The in-line six-cylinder format produces less vibration due to it's characteristic 'perfect balance' whilst delivering a clean, engaging engine sound. Additionally, the in-line six-cylinder unit uses a simple structure, resulting in an engine weight similar to that of a conventional four-cylinder diesel, thus minimising the difference in handling balance despite the higher engine capacity.

As with the PHEV, the all-new e-Skyactiv D engine is mated to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, and whilst the 200ps unit is equipped with rear-wheel drive, the 254ps engine benefits from Mazda's i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system. The lower powered e-Skyactiv D engine develops 200ps at 3000-4200 rpm and maximum torque of 450Nm at 1400-3000 rpm. Combined with 153Nm of torque available from the M Hybrid Boost system's electric motor, this will accelerate the CX-60 from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds. Despite this impressive performance, the 200ps CX-60 e-Skyactiv D still generates CO2 emissions of just 127g/km. With 254ps at 3750rpm the more powerful version develops maximum torque of 550Nm at 1500-2400 rpm, and once again assisted by up to 153Nm of electric motor torque, will accelerate to 62mph in 7.4seconds with CO2 emissions of just 137g/km.

At a later date a third engine will join the CX-60 line-up, this is the all-new in-line six cylinder 3.0-litre e-Skyactiv X petrol engine, which will combine the smoothness six-cylinder engines are known for with the innovative precise combustion control technology developed for the four-cylinder e-Skyactiv X engine used in the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30. The larger capacity enables the pushing of more air into the engine removing the need for turbocharging. This enabled Mazda to create a unit with a simple base structure to which is added a double overhead camshaft and variable valve timing that changes the camshaft phase reliably and instantly. As a result, internal EGR control achieves combustion with a low ratio of fuel to air.

The engine delivers smooth acceleration and an engaging sound. Moreover, due to enhanced lean combustion technology, the unit also achieves similar fuel economy to the four-cylinder e-Skyactiv X engine. More details of the 3.0-litre e-Skyactiv X engine will be released in due course.

Both the forthcoming six-cylinder engines in the Mazda CX-60 feature Mazda M Hybrid Boost - Mazda's 48v mild hybrid system. When paired with the diesel engine, it not only enhances fuel economy, but also improves environmental performance by using the electric motor to support the engine with energy recuperated when coasting or slowing in the light load (idle to low speed) range where internal combustion engines are not very efficient. The support provided by the motor when pulling away from a standing start and help delivering smoothness during gear shifts can be felt the instant the driver applies the throttle, contributing to the evolution of the Jinba-Ittai driving experience.

Driving

From the launch of the Mazda CX-7 in 2007 through each generation of Mazda CX-5 and the smaller Mazda CX-30 and CX-3, Mazda's CX models have developed a well-earned reputation as great handling SUVs - and its new flagship SUV has been developed with the same focus on dynamic excellence.

Based on Mazda's Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, the CX-60 has a longitudinal front-engine rear-wheel drive mechanical layout that has been designed to work with both the e-Skyactiv PHEV drivetrain and the forthcoming in-line six-cylinder engines, and across all models the platform is optimised for easy installation of the electrification technologies such as M Hybrid Boost on six-cylinder models and the plug-in hybrid tech of the PHEV.

However, as you'd expect from Mazda, the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture features numerous elements focused on ensuring this SUV delivers the dynamic engagement Mazda is famous for. Like every car in the Mazda range, the feeling of Jinba-ittai (oneness between car and driver) is clear from the moment you get behind the wheel of the CX-60.

This focus on dynamic ability starts with bodyshell rigidity levels that ensure drivers can feel vehicle response without lag, seats that make it even easier for every occupant to maintain balance while the car is moving, suspension that stabilises vehicle posture while driving, and a Mazda-unique vehicle posture control system - Kinematic Posture Control (KPC). Mazda's goal with the Mazda CX-60 was to enable the driver to instantly sense the car's response to each control operation, resulting in a car that offers the driver a true sense of unity from behind the wheel.

The rigidity of the body structure was strengthened by taking advantage of the longitudinal powertrain layout to enlarge and strengthen the cross-section of the front frame. Increasing the rigidity of the frame member joints contributes to greater overall rigidity of the entire multi-ring body structure. The positioning of the high voltage battery between the front and rear axles and as low as possible within the bodyshell gives the new Mazda CX-60 PHEV a particularly low centre of gravity. This, combined with a permanent all-wheel drive system incorporating shaft-driven transfer of torque between the axles, gives the car superior handling characteristics on a par with the best in the premium segment.

With a double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension set up, the CX-60's suspension has been designed to control the sprung mass smoothly during cornering and stabilise vehicle posture in a wide variety of speed ranges. To ensure the springs and dampers operate smoothly, only moving straight up and down, with no lateral or longitudinal shaking in response to input from the tyres: the adoption of a suspension geometry that smooths vertical movement of the car body has been achieved thanks to a zero offset between tyre input and the position of the damping support members; complemented by an optimised rear suspension layout.

In addition, the adoption of aluminium die-casting for the top of the suspension on all four wheels increases rigidity. This has resulted in more efficient input transmission from the suspension to the vehicle body and, hence, quicker transmission of force from the front to rear suspension. The front double wishbone set-up has control arms at the top and bottom, while making use of the additional space afforded by the longitudinally mounted powertrain, the suspension control arms have been extended and the longitudinal span secured. Even the most basic parts of the suspension have been carefully designed to make the tyres grip the road surface better and stabilise vehicle movement even in situation such as cornering or driving on rough surfaces. Refining the suspension settings has resulted in a simple, smooth body movement which offers close communication between car and driver.

Using knowledge and experience gained from the MX-5, the rear multi-link suspension is designed to enhance ride comfort and reduce road noise without negatively affecting handling or stability. The use of metal ball joints in place of rubber bushes on the outer sides of the rear suspension links increases rigidity. As a result, the structure transmits force from the rear tyres to the vehicle body more directly, this means that, in turn, vehicle response to driver input will be transmitted to the driver in a more direct manner, allowing the driver to experience a true sense of connection with the car.

A technology that debuted on the 2022 Mazda MX-5, the Mazda CX-60 also features Kinematic Posture Control (KPC) - a new, Mazda-unique technology that takes advantage of the way the rear suspension of the Mazda CX-60 is designed to oppose lift force and draw the vehicle body downwards when the vehicle brakes. KPC makes the most of these suspension characteristics, stabilising vehicle posture when cornering under particularly high G-force by braking the inside rear wheel slightly to mitigate roll and draw the car body downwards. In addition, the system uses the speed difference between the rear wheels to detect the turning state in real time, using this information to make vehicle movement more linear, and stabilise vehicle posture as required. Plus, thanks to using existing sensors, the KPC system adds no weight to the Mazda CX-60.

Steering feel is also a strong point of the Mazda CX-60 as the dual-pinion electric power steering (EPS) has a more rigid EPS motor and parts, therefore creating a solid and consistent relationship between the steering wheel angle and front tyre angle. The result is a direct, clean steering feel that provides precise and reassuring control over the car.

For keen drivers there's the option to use the steering wheel paddles to manually control shifts for the eight-speed automatic gearbox, while ideal for an SUV with off-road or towing abilities, Mazda's Hill Descent Control (HDC) supports safe downhill driving on steep slopes with slippery or rough surfaces. The system constantly monitors tyre rotation and uses this information to precisely control brake fluid pressure and stabilise vehicle movement, automatically keeping the car at a constant speed without the driver needing to use the brakes. And thanks to Mazda's i-Activ AWD system and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) the CX-60 offers a safe and secure driving experience even on various off-road surfaces thanks to its high controllability. This enhances the driver's confidence when experiencing low grip surfaces.

In addition to the focus on dynamic ability, Mazda's engineers have ensured the CX-60 has the levels of refinement expected in a large premium SUV. The Mazda CX-60 utilises both sound insulation and sound absorption technology to eliminate all unpleasant noise and give the cabin a uniquely refined Mazda quietness. Sound insulation and noise transfer prevention has been improved by reducing the number of holes and gaps in the floor to an absolute minimum, and by adopting a two wall, body panel and surface material structure to reduce wind noise. Sound absorption has been enhanced through adjustment of the cushioning layer between the body panels and surface materials to better control wind noise and absorb more low frequency sounds such as road noise.

Safety

The Mazda CX-60's comprehensive range of advanced i-Activsense driver assistance systems ensure active safety at the highest level, and target a Euro NCAP 5-star safety rating, while as with all Mazda vehicles, high levels of passive safety and pedestrian mitigation are designed to protect in the worse-case situation.

Several new technologies debut in the Mazda CX-60: See-Through View - a next-generation 360-degree monitor with extended field of view at low speeds is part of the Convenience Pack, while Hill Descent Control (HDC), which assists in safely descending steep slopes with slippery or rough road surfaces is standard across all models, and i-Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC), which can now incorporate speed limits from Traffic Sign Recognition, is part of the Driver Assistance Pack.

Also standard across all models, Vehicle Exit Warning (BSM) for rear-approaching road users is a system to avoid opening a front door into rear approaching road users when parallel parking on the road.

Other i-Activsense systems include: Advanced Smart City Brake Assist (Advanced SCBS) with pedestrian and cyclist detection and intersection function, Rear Emergency Brake Assist (SBS-R) with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist with Steering Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) and Drowsiness Detection (DAA).

Included in the optional Convenience Pack, Mazda's 360° View Monitor uses a four camera system that covers all sides of the vehicle to display a bird's-eye view of the car from above on the centre display, as well as a choice of front, rear and left or right side views. The Mazda CX-60 adds See-Through View as a further evolution of the 360° View Monitor functionality. It displays an image on the screen that seemingly allows the driver to see through the front and rear corners of the car from their viewpoint, making it easier to spot objects obscured by the vehicle's bodywork. This helps the driver remain fully aware of surrounding conditions when driving slowly in tight spaces such as car parks and narrow alleys.

Standard across the Mazda CX-60 range, Advanced Smart City Brake Support (Advanced SCBS) uses a forward-sensing camera to detect vehicles and pedestrians ahead -both by day and at night - and help avoid collisions or mitigate damage in the event one does occur. The system automatically stops or reduces the speed of the car when there is a risk of collision with the vehicle or pedestrian in front.

Other key i-Activsense driver-supporting technologies included as standard across the range include Mazda's Lane-keep Assist System and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Blind Spot Monitoring keeps the driver aware of vehicles approaching when, for example, changing lanes. Its Rear Cross Traffic Alert function monitors the vehicle's surroundings when reversing, alerting the driver when it detects vehicles approaching from the sides.

Part of the optional Driver Assistance Pack, Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) with Stop and Go function automatically maintains the appropriate vehicle speed and optimum following distance, even if the vehicle ahead comes to a complete standstill. i-Adaptive Cruise Control (i-ACC) is an additional function which allows drivers to easily set the MRCC to the speed limit by using Traffic Sign Recognition.

As you expect from Mazda, the new CX-60 has been developed with the very highest standards of passive safety. When it comes to front impact mitigation three breakthrough technologies combine to deliver excellent frontal collision safety performance: Firstly, the multi-path structure efficiency absorbs energy through three separate load paths -main, upper and lower- to soften the impact on occupants and minimise cabin deformation. Secondly, the axial compression frame doubles energy absorption efficiency whilst contributing to both space and weight savings. Thirdly, the framework is designed to be as straight as possible. These technologies not only ensure the Mazda CX-60 has outstanding forward collision resistance, but also support its design by contributing to a class-leading short front overhang of only 842 mm.

When it comes to side impact protection, the frame connections, which are traditionally a weak point in terms of bending and twisting, have been strengthened to distribute the load. A 1,800 MPa grade high-strength material made using Mazda's new moulding technology has been combined with conventional 1,300 MPa grade material in the same parts to enhance strength in non-bending areas whilst reducing it in bending areas, achieving an ideal deformation mode whilst reducing weight. The roof design marries the open, airy feel of a panoramic roof with the strength required in the event of a roll over. The open feel has been maintained by adopting a thin roof bow, adjusting the roof cross-section, and using stronger materials for the bow itself - 980 MPa as opposed to 500MPa- to make the roof stronger. Cabin occupant protection in the event of a side impact is further enhanced by the fitting of both centre airbags and rear seat side airbags.

To protect occupants from a rear impact, the CX-60 is designed to absorb twice as much rear impact energy as the current CX-5. To date, Mazda vehicles have absorbed energy by the bending and deformation of the rear frame. However, the Mazda CX-60 uses axial deformation of the rear side frame to absorb double the energy. At the same time, the thickness of the side frame has been reduced to effect further weight saving.

e-Skyactiv PHEV versions of the new Mazda CX-60 are equipped with comprehensive high voltage protection measures to protect vehicle occupants from the risk of electric shocks. In addition to the strength of the vehicle body, physical protection has been added to the battery itself, ensuring both direct and indirect contact protection as well as insulation resistance. Specifically, this involved using malleable aluminium -an extremely strong, crack-resistant material- for the battery housing, as well as adding energy absorbing material to the outside of the housing to prevent it from breaking. Multiple measures based on different electrical principles have also been implemented to cut off parts other than the battery from the high voltage system in the event of a collision. A circuit interrupter and voltage reducer are used to shut off the flow of electricity that would cause power dissipation.

The Mazda CX-60's pedestrian injury mitigation measures include a bonnet that achieves both pedestrian head protection and rigidity in a single structure by adopting a cross-sectional structure that divides the panel into an upper section that absorbs energy and a lower section that provides rigidity. In addition, the design ensures there is sufficient space between this structure and rigid under-bonnet parts such as the engine. In addition, the front wings have been given enough height to expand the bonnet crush zone so that it will gently absorb head impact in the case of a collision with a pedestrian. The front bumper face ensures ample space between the bumper cover (design surface) and the bonnet and bumper beam. The weight of the internal structure of the bumper face has been carefully controlled so that it will gently absorb leg and hip impact. And the internal structure of the bumper face is divided vertically to absorb energy from straight ahead and above, while the inclusion of a support bracket helps prevent bumper hanging.

With the robust passive safety you'd expect and an even more advanced offering of intelligent active safety technology, the Mazda CX-60 delivers the very latest safety standards and crucially delivers a host of systems to assist the driver to enjoy the drive, by reducing fatigue and supporting when required but never detracting from the love of driving.
