About the Car

2021 Mazda MX-5 RF

The appeal of the critically acclaimed Mazda MX-5 continues to grow today after more than three decades and 1.1 million units sold. You can find more visual details of the 2021 Mazda MX-5 RF gallery by scrolling up.

With good reason: Repeatedly labelled the most fun for the money on four wheels, the world’s favourite roadster has evolved over the years in breathtaking style, yet always remained true to its Jinba Ittai ethos that puts driver and car in perfect harmony.

Enter the 2021 MX-5, featuring energising new colour options inside and out. Enhancing its World Car Design of the Year-winning looks is Pure White nappa leather upholstery complemented by the Deep Crystal Blue Mica exterior and available Dark Cherry soft-top. A special edition version of the 2021 MX-5 features a choice of 16-inch Rays or 17-inch BBS wheels.
Mazda also includes the convenience of standard wireless support for Apple CarPlay for both the soft-top and RF (retractable fastback) versions.

What hasn’t changed is the razor-sharp handling that comes with the MX-5’s innovative lightweight construction and perfect balance, the free-revving Skyactiv-G engines (which satisfy Euro 6d without a particle filter) mated to an exquisitely shifting manual transmission, and the peace of mind of a comprehensive range of available i-Activsense driver assistance technology.

 EXTERIOR & INTERIOR DESIGN

⦁ Deep Crystal Blue Mica joins body colour line-up
⦁ Pure White nappa leather upholstery invigorates the snug interior
⦁ Updated roadster marks return of Dark Cherry soft-top

Visually, the 2021 Mazda MX-5 remains true to its celebrated Kodo design, which captured World Car Design of the Year as well as World Car of the Year in 2016, with refined details like dark 16 and 17-inch alloy wheels.

It retains its energetic style, blurring the boundaries between exterior and interior while highlighting its perfectly balanced proportions and bringing the car’s low centre of gravity to the fore.
The two-seater’s unmatched handling and lightweight construction are unmistakable. Body finishing options now include Deep Crystal Blue Mica, which accentuates the elegance and enriches the MX-5’s shapes.

The 2021 model’s Pure White nappa leather upholstery, meanwhile, represents an energising and cabin quality-enhancing new interior highlight.

While the roadster’s soft-top opens and shuts with a simple flick of the wrist, the power-retractable RF hardtop model brings a special touch of design prowess and comfort. The fully automatic three-piece hardtop offers customers the best of both sports car worlds: Namely, open-air motoring with the added security of a fixed-roof coupe.

The RF boasts the fastest retractable hardtop on the market with an exceptionally clever and narrow mechanism that opens or closes in only 13 seconds – even at speeds of up to 10km/h. Thanks to the solid roof and thorough sound insulation, the Mazda MX-5 RF ensures unprecedented comfort.

The soft-top – now available on the 2021 MX-5 in stylish Dark Cherry – is also better insulated than previous generations.

Inside, the driver and passenger sit lower than in previous MX-5 generations and enjoy better all-round visibility as well as easier seat adjustment and door operation. The steering column is adjustable not only in height but also telescopically, with the steering wheel, instruments and controls all arranged symmetrically along a single axis for stress and fatigue-free operation.
Mazda is also offering a special edition version of the 2021 MX-5 featuring a choice of 16-inch Rays or 17-inch BBS wheels.

In addition, the company is extending the availability of its 100th Anniversary limited edition MX-5. Its colour combination – Snowflake White Pearlescent body with burgundy soft top, carpeting and leather upholstery – pays homage to Mazda’s first passenger car, the Mazda R360 Coupe introduced back in 1960.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

⦁ Enhanced chassis, body structure and steering ensure outstanding handling
⦁ Engines offer improved both responsiveness as well as efficiency

The latest generation introduced Skyactiv technologies to the roadster for greater driving pleasure and lower fuel consumption. The current Mazda MX-5 is the lightest model since the first edition launched in 1989 and, despite the increase in comfort, steers through curves as agilely and crisply as ever.

This is possible due to clever modifications to the chassis and body structure, a significantly higher proportion of high-strength steel and aluminium, and perfect weight distribution between the front and rear axles. The space-saving electric power steering delivers even more precise and direct feedback on steering wheel movements than its predecessor.

The two high-compression, high-revving Skyactiv-G direct-injection petrol engines in the 2021 MX-5 are the ideal complement to the car’s handling characteristics. Thanks to internal engine upgrades, Mazda can dispense with the need for a petrol particulate filter in both available engine, yet still meet the strict requirements of the Euro 6d emissions standard well before they take effect in 2021.

The two-litre Skyactiv-G is even more responsive and direct across the engine’s range, responding quickly to throttle commands and sounding more powerful while retaining its efficiency. The four-cylinder redlines at 7,500 rpm with maximum output of 135 kW/184 PS at 7,000 rpm, while peak torque of 205 Nm is already available at 4,000 rpm.
With the Skyactiv-G 2.0, the MX-5 soft-top accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and to a top speed of 219 km/h. The fuel consumption in both body versions is 6.9 l/100 km (CO2: 157-156 g/km). To further enhance efficiency, the Skyactiv-G 2.0 is equipped with i-Eloop, a condenser-based braking energy recovery system, and the Mazda i-stop start-stop system.
The engine line-up includes the Skyactiv-G 1.5, which produces 97 kW/132 PS at 7,000 rpm and maximum torque of 152 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Both MX-5 models with the Skyactiv-G 1.5 consume 6.1 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 138 g/km. They are also equipped with the i-Eloop braking energy recovery system and the Mazda i-stop start-stop system. The engines are mated to a quick-shifting six-speed Skyactiv-MT manual transmission designed exclusively for the MX-5, with its classic front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive layout. The MX-5 RF also comes with an automatic transmission option.

The active bonnet, improved for the current generation MX-5 to enhance pedestrian protection, lifts in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, creating a crucial crumple zone between the bonnet and rigid engine parts underneath. This reduces the risk of serious head injuries without negatively affecting the car’s design.
