AN EVOLUTION OF REXTON DESIGN

SsangYong Motors has led Korea’s SUV market since introducing the Rexton in 2001. In 2017, the Rexton was totally revamped with a 4th generation model, and is now known to be smarter, safer, and more stylish than ever.  The new 2017 Rexton was a total re-design from the ground up, the only thing in common with its’ predecessor, is its name.

Following hard on the heels of new Tivoli, when SsangYong set new standards for value-priced compact SUVs, the 2017 Rexton introduction was further evidence of the brands re-generation after Mahindra and Mahindra made significant investments in the company.  It demonstrated the rapid progress being made as a specialist producer of 4×4’s and SUV’s.

Now enters the facelift to the 2017 model into the UK market. The refreshed, modern new-look 20-model year design was led by the team at the firms R&D Centre in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, and features a range of updates designed to deliver more in every respect – more presence, more prestige, more strength, more safety, more style and more space.  It’s been restyled inside and out with graceful detailing that complements its rugged off-road capability, and it looks and feels like a game-changer.

From every aspect, the new 20-model year Rexton has an eye-catching design, with a powerful, sturdy stance that serves as a solid foundation for its superior ride and handling dynamics. Inside, the Rexton impresses even further with its driver assistance technologies and safety aids and multimedia options. Engineered for an active lifestyle, new Rexton exceeds expectations by delivering spacious comfort, practical go-anywhere ability and superior safety. Its exterior is inspired by the ‘Dignified Motion’ of SsangYong’s design language and as you’d expect from over 65 years of SsangYong four-wheel drive heritage, it’s a magnificently muscular thing.

EXTERIOR DESIGN CUES

Rexton is a multi-role four-wheel drive SUV, blending style with bold features that project stability and on-road presence. It’s a bold step forward for SsangYong, particularly with the new and most noticeable difference from the outgoing model – its grille. Its striking and impressive, giving Rexton an immediate and impressive presence. SsangYong’s updated flagship model retains it’s a rugged, real four-wheel drive capability but shows new dynamic lines, taking its design cue from SsangYong’s concept of “Dignified Motion”.

Its headlight units group together LED daytime running lights, high-intensity headlamps for improved night vision, LED fog lights, positioning lamps and directional indicators. At the rear of the vehicle are LED rear combination side lights, a spoiler with high-mounted LED stop light and LED number plate lights. And from all angles the car is enhanced by the road-owning 18-inch alloy wheels.

INTERIOR DESIGN CUES

Rexton offers generous levels of equipment along with cutting edge integrated design technologies.  Its interior achieves a balance between comfort and control – a perfect equilibrium offering generous space, contemporary luxury and impressive technology.

To ensure maximum space and comfort, both driver and passenger needs are taken into consideration in the design of the overall package. This is a multi-role SUV which blends style with load carrying capability, designed to be somewhere you’d be happy to spend a lot of time in; the cabin is spacious and luxurious with plenty of shoulder and headroom. Legroom in the second row is especially generous and second-row seats may be double-folded to maximise the load space. In fact, the Rexton’s size gives you one of the largest load spaces in its sector.

The Rexton is incredibly flexible with a huge capacity for luggage. Measured up to window level, the EX model offers 1,977 litres of rear boot space with the seats down and 820 litres of boot space with the seats up. The second row of seats split 60:40 (with ISOFIX) with a folding centre armrest and fold completely flat for large loads. In 7-seat models, along with the second-row seats folding 60:40, the third row can be folded individually 50:50 to give more flexibility. Access to these rear seats is made easy by the double-folding second row seats.

The ergonomic eight-way driver seat has four-way lumbar support and the passenger seat is six-way power adjustable. Maximum seat comfort is ensured by Pullmaflex springs and varying density of the foam used in different areas of the seat cushion. For added comfort, the tilt angle on the second row of seats can be adjusted up to 32.5 degree maximum from the vertical position. In addition, the front and rear seats are heated, and the Ultimate front seats are ventilated. Seats are trimmed with cloth, a top-end TPU or Nappa leather, giving it a “soft-touch” and premium feel cabin.

Rexton’s ever-thinking ‘brain’ is its supervision cluster. It provides quick, easy access to a wealth of important information including a whole range of safety warnings such as lane departure warnings, parking sensors, navigation assist, tyre direction warnings and smart power tailgate warnings. Other features include heated steering wheel with tilt, rake and reach, keyless start and automatic tailgate.

THE REXTON LINE-UP

Available in a 2.2 diesel engine with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed Mercedes Benz automatic transmission, the SsangYong Rexton is extremely well equipped and comes with generous levels of equipment as standard. Adorned with at new striking and defined front styling concept, the D-segment vehicle comfortably seats five or seven passengers with plenty of cargo space and the versatility that you would expect from a modern SUV. There are three trim levels to choose from – the low-spec EX, mid-spec ELX and the high-spec Ultimate. Sharing the same body style and powertrain, the key specification differences are as follows:
